Arrows add to Cosmos' woes

Posted: 24 November 2009 Time: 23:08

Jomo Cosmos suffered their 10th loss in 17 Absa Premiership games when they went down 1-0 to Golden Arrows at the Rand Stadium on Tuesday night.

Ezenkosi made a fairly lively start to the game, holding their own in the first 20 minutes or so, although they struggled to create any real clear-cut chances.

Sekou Camara, effectively playing up front by himself in the opening half, did his best to make things happen for Cosmos, but all he had to show for his efforts was a 22nd minute shot which flew over the bar, before an injury forced him to depart the action soon afterwards.

Arrows took a 33rd minute lead when Thanduyise Khuboni’s storming run cut through the heart of the Cosmos defence.

Khuboni was picked out by an inch-perfect 30-yard pass by Njabulo Manqana, allowing him to easily beat keeper Avril Phali, who was badly exposed by a static Ezenkosi rearguard.

Five minutes before the break it appeared as if Abafana Bes’thende had doubled their lead when Richard Henyekane’s inviting cross from the right was put into the net by Thamsanqa Gabuza’s diving header, but the goal was deemed off-sides.

Arrows started the second stanza on the attack, with Phali twice making good saves from Manqana in quick succession.

Cosmos though began to show more urgency in attack, but still struggled to threaten the Arrows goal, with Ayo Oluwafemi’s long range effort in the 54th minute making sure that Arrows custodian Thulasizwe Khuzwayo was kept on his toes.

However, it was Khuzwayo’s counterpart, Phali, who had a super game for the hosts, who was soon to make far more difficult saves as he tipped Gabuza’s 75th minute header over the bar and then denied Henyekane the chance to pull the trigger in the 78th minute when he stole the ball off the Arrows striker’s feet.

Cosmos put good effort into the final 15 minutes of the game, but time and time again they lacked the spark up front needed to convert what were on occasion good build ups, into goals.
