TV stations sweat on Nations Cup rights

Posted: 2009-11-24 14:13

Ghanaians could miss out on a bumper Africa Cup of Nations in January and the chance to watch the Black Stars square off against Ivory Coast, Togo and Burkina Faso unless the country’s television stations can cough up the 1.5 million Euro that television rights owners are demanding.

LC 2 International who own the rights to the tournament are demanding the huge figure with the consortium of TV3, GTV and Metro TV now scrambling to find the money that will be needed to ensure the entire nation does not miss out on the chance to see Africa’s biggest showpiece football event on terrestrial television.

With the 2010 World Cup already in the bag for the three stations, they say they are keen to get the January Cup of Nations but worry the money being demanded by LC 2 is too much. The right holders meanwhile are refusing to budge.

It is a replay of the tussling that went on in 2006 ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt before government stepped in and made available the 1million euro that eventually ensured the match was show on free to air television.

And it seems in the end, the three stations will head in the direction of the Osu Castle to try and in the least get a subvention from government in addition to the money they can raise on the market in order to ensure that the Nations Cup will be watched in as many homes as possible in Ghana.

bawah akbar, u don't need to insult a whole nation because someone could not control his mouth. Poverty is all over the place, in America, Europe and Asia name it not to tlak about africa which i think Ghana is not exceptional. That u have discovered oil is not a parametre that poverty would be eradicated; it may even make it worst. check countries like Venezuela, gabon brazil Egypt ans so on.
