Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs’ legend John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu is back in action, playing for Larry Brookstone’s Highlands Park in the Gauteng stream of the Vodacom Second Division.

Although the man turns 44 next month and has 73 Bafana caps to his name as well as having played over 550 top-flight games, including lengthy spells in Turkey with renowned outfits like Fenerbahce and Bursaspor, he still has the skills to change a game.

The 1996 African Cup of Nations winner, who last played competitive football for AmaZulu in 2007/08 before becoming a free agent, joined the ambitious Park at the beginning of the season.

“It’s unbelievable,” says club official Brad Kaftel.
“Shoes could be at home walking the dogs but he isn’t married and says he enjoys playing soccer.

“He’s a legend; you should see his free kicks - before you know it the ball is straight over the wall into the back of the net. He played our first match but was then injured and out for about a month but has certainly played the last six games - we usually give him about 60 minutes.

“When he came off the pitch against Orlando Pirates’ development side, Yebo Yes, which ended in a 1-1 draw all the opposition fans – about 200 of them, stood up and applauded.

“Half of our side are under-23 so you can imagine how they look up to him!”

Shoes is a joke. Instead of getting himself a wife he persists on playing soccer. Next year he will be playing at 5th Division. I always asked myself why he doesn't want to quit. Now I know the guy has no life. I am sure he has even given up on ever getting married.

Well done to Shoes. it shows if u take care of ur body u can remain competitive for a long time. Lot of players should be learning a thing or two from Shoes. He's a legend. As to getting a wife, that is his own decision and no 1 can tell him what to do

All of you with naive, stupid comments should look at yourselves and be ashamed. Shoes is an SA legend which deserves to applauded for his achievement. Where is Scara, Malatsi, Khanye, Mbuthu, Matombo, Ace Gulwa just to mention a few. they all no longer visible in SA soccer, but Shoes is. I know Shoes' son who is twenty something years old and i think he lives with shoes a direct replica of shoes. I think shoes has seen it all and I bet on my last penny that 75 percent of married men want out of marriage but due to a number of obstacles such as children n wat ada people will say ur stuck in it. So Shoes has guts and congrats that he proves that age is a number because kuVodacom the youngsters run like crazy!!!!
