Obafemi Martins (R) celebrates with team-mate Yakubu Ayiegbeni after scoring 2 goals

Martins brace seals qualification

Martins brace seals qualification

Posted: 2009-11-14 20:57

Obafemi Martins came off the substitute’s bench to score a priceless brace to help Nigeria beat Kenya 3-2 and snatch a 2010 World Cup ticket that looked all but gone to Tunisia.

The North Africans did not help their cause by losing 0-1 to Mozambique in Maputo on a dramatic day of Group B qualifying.

Going into the final round of games, the Super Eagles trailed Tunisia by two points, and needed to win against Kenya to have any hope of profiting from a Tunisia slip up.

But the Eagles, who have made hard work of this campaign, made things even tougher for themselves when they went a goal behind after just 15 minutes.

Some slick Kenyan passing sliced open the Nigerian defence and Denis Oliech strode in to tuck away past Vincent Enyeama and beyond Joseph Yobo's desperate last ditch attempt to clear.

Nigeria were forcing thei way into the Kenyan area and creating half chances but failing to finish, and coach Shuaibu Amodu threw on Obafemi Martins in the second half.

That proved to be the turnng point. The impressive John Mikel Obi launched a superb ball into the area, and Osaze Odemwingie, ubiquitous as ever, cushioned his header into the path of Martins, who threw himself at the ball to draw Nigeria level.

Yakubu, who had missed a simple chance in the first half, made amends. Obinna Nsofor squeezed off a shot but the miscued ball fell invitingly for the Yak. His first effort came off the post, but the Everton striker made no mistake with his second effort.

But dreadful defending allowed Kenya back into the game. Allan Watende was allowed all the time in the world to meet a teasing cross with a powerful header, and it was as you were again.

Martins, however, showed how valuable he was when he tracked a Kenyan counter attack all the way into his half, then arrived in the box to acrobatically squeeze in a throw-in with the outside of his foot.

And the team could celebrate, and play for the final whistle when word came in that Dario Monteiro had given Mozambique an 83rd minute lead in Maputo.

That game went on to 9 minutes of additional time, but Tunisia failed to find a goal, and Nigeria held on to join Ghana and Ivory Coast on the trip to South Africa.

So Nigeria scraped through at last! That many here are thanking God shows how close the qualification was. But please, leave God out of this!
Almost everyone is a winner today except, the Tunisians and the Kenyans. Mozambique played to qualify for the Nations cup and Nigeria for the world cup.
For people like Ken Gadaffi, Frank Original and co., yes it is always nice to be vindicated. Those who were very critical of the team though, did so because the Team even today, did not play as if they understood what was at stake.
For Amodu, I think he has performed greatly for having qualified Nigeria for a second time under so much pressure. He is unfortunately, a controversial figure. There are other precedent in sport, of players or coaches, not been fully accepted in spite of their successes. Amodu I have a feeling, is one of such. More so, those that are not in favor of him are only reacting to the manner of which the team has been playing.
In top football, managers have been fired even if they had qualified for major competitions or occupying the top of league tables. It is always a delicate balance between having a good result and playing good football. Judging by our qualification one could argue that we had good results but not a good display hence the dissatisfaction among many fans. The disorganized atmosphere of the Football Association did not help matters either.
It would have been wise to reorganize ourselves now, if we want to make an impact at the world cup proper. For the present crop of players, I could hardly count four that are world cup materials. Pele played in the world cup at a tender age. So include Stanley Okoro, Azeez, Chukwudi and Omeruo in the team for test matches starting very early. Forget about the controversies surrounding their ages true or false. We need daring players like Okoro (though sometimes too selfish) who runs in front of defenders without fear and defenders that does not commit too much fouls winning the ***** from their opponents.
Critics or praise singers, we all have a role to play!

THANK YOU JESUS, @KEN GHADAFFI,KEEP UP THE FAITH MAN,@ALL TODAYS VICTORY IS FOR NIGERIAN FOOTBALL.
THOUGH THAT TECHNICAL CREW IS STILL A SUSPECT, ANYWAYS LETS SAVOUR THE VICTORY .EAGLETS TURN TODAY,ITS GONNA BE A DOUBLE CELEBRATION.
BRAVO EAGLES!!

Michael : 2009-11-14 21:39

Its true Nigeria has finally qualified for SA 2010.In all the jubilation of Super Eagales fans, let us not quickly forget that we (Nigeria)do not have a team yet.If we go to SA 2010 with this current team,we are destined to fail. Its a fact.
Come to think of it,we struggled to qualify and only have Mozambique to thank for our qualification. We struggled in our group right from the first match. Our first match with Mozambique in Maputo was a match we lost as we were outplayed by our host and Mozambique scored two good goals the referee had no business disallowing.
Nigeria is my country but let is keep sentiments apart and face reality.
We faced Tunisia in Abuja and could not defeat a Tunisian side comprised mainly of home based players.
What about our match with Mozambique in Abuja?Mozambique matched us man for man in Abuja and even outplayed us for the greater part of the game.Mozambique even hit the woodwork and thank GOD it never rested behind the net or it would have been a different story now.
The matter with the Super Eagles is not really in the result of the matches played,it is in the below standard performance of the team as a whole.Players playing as though they have nothing to offer their country or no business being in the field of play.A technical crew led by Shaibu Amodu that is so deficient in coaching skills.
My suggestion is that we need to change our technical crew.Believe it or not,we need a sound foreign coach. The entire Super Eagles team needs to be over hauled. We really need men who are ready to put on the jerseys of this Eagales' team and play with great spirit and enthusiasm. When ever I watch this crop of Super Eagles players,I always feel embarassed when I remember the crop of players we had during USA 1994 world cup and Atlanta 1996.In 1994,Nigeria was once ranked 5th in the world by Fifa and ajugded the best entertaining team during USA 1994.We saw the great spirits in our players then when they played and their swift and entertaining way of playing.Countries were scared of playing Nigeria then.
Finally,we seriously do need a foreign coach or we are bound to fail in SA 2010.We really also need to over haul the enire team and bring in players who are eager to fight for their Country in the field of play.Nigeria has players and if we look for them,we would find them both at home and overseas.
Sentiments apart,if we go to SA 2010 with this team,we would fail.We cannot parade this team with the best of teams from Europe and other countries of the world.
Among our group in this world cup qualifiers, the most impressive team to me has been Mozambique.
People overlooked them(Mozambique)before the qualifiers began, but they matched every team in this group including the big names Nigeria & Tunisia strenght for strenght.
I am very much impressed with their strenght, style of play and team work and I think their coach has really done a great job moulding that team and has good technical coaching skills in his brain.
Mozambique were written off before the qualifiers started, and I think they proved a point.I have been following their growth in football for sometime now and with time,Mozambique would be a force to reckon with in African football.
For the Super Eagales,we need to over haul the technical crew and the team if we are to make an impact in SA 2010.
A word is enough for the wise.Sentiments apart.

Stilo at it again. Michael has just stated the facts but because you are Amodu's boy boy you have to pure insults on him. I guess you will never change. We all are happy that we finally made it to SA but that will not prevent michael and all those who does not believe in Amodu to say it out loud and clear now. We go to SA with Amodu and we are doomed.

we are saying thank you JESUS, THANK YOU MY LORD we are saying THANK YOU JESUS, THANK YOU MY LORD.
Please let all Nigerians join hands in singing this song to the LORD ALMIGHTY for HE has indeed vindicated and led Nigeria to the world cup. HE knows that the country is in total turmoil and jeopardy and the only way HE can keep the people of this country away from sadness is by giving us a ticket to WC so that we can have something to look up to next year and endure all the corrupt practices, robbery, kidnapping, exploiting, 419 and bad goverment we are facing.
i know this day must come to past and indeed it has.
once more, all the glory to our FATHER IN HEAVEN.

Eugene: 2009-11-15 01:12

Congratulations to the super eagles, their coaching crew and all Nigerians.Glory be to God.
Though the team and their coaches have a lot to work on before the world cup, I believe the Nations cup will go a long way to helping in that respect.
This victory should show Nigerians that when you have qualifying matches, each one of the matches counts. People should stop saying Mozambique helped us. They played the 6th game of the round just as we played our 6th and last game of the round.
Go super eagles, South Africa 2010 here we come!
Note: Nigeria is not easy in competition proper

oxgood: 2009-11-15 01:13

@ Ken gadaffi and stilos, u guys are great. ur faith in God and amodu has remained steadfast. People calling for amodus sack should remember that Amodu has qualified nigeria twice for the world cup, 02 and now 09 and never lost any game during the qualifers...just only one defeat in a friendly in far away colombia. Nigerians should learn to appreciate their own and be greatful for once in their lifes. Our football authorities should allow amodu to finish the job...secure us the nations cup and even win the world cup for us...nothing is impossible after todays match and Gods mercies..is truely upon us.Many thanks to Mikel and Matins ....so fellow nigerians go to churches, mosques and give thanks!

Let me enjoy this qualification tonite, I shall comment fully tomorrow. However, let me just say our team are very lucky today and the players did it with their individual determinations and raw talents, it had nothing to do with managerial technical know how, should we continue with status quos we shall be heavily disgraced in AFCON and WC 2006! Then even Afganistan team will see us as fair game. I cannot beleive some fans here are rooting for mediocrity, no wonder our country is in such a mess!!

COMMON NIGERIA!!!

ken gadaffi: 2009-11-15 03:18

It has been a long battle, indeed i said it is a marathon rather than a sprint as many people may have thought when we first drew with Moz. Thank GOD today our faith has been justified and we have been vindicated.
when many of us stood behind the team ( not necessarily AMODU) most people thought we were crazy but unfortunately they didnt see what we saw.

I want to seize this opportunity to thank all those who shared the same faith as i did from the onset and never waivered even in difficult time during the campaign.
The list in obviously inexhaustible as i could only remember the ardent believers of the SE. Billiom
Oscar,Stan,Frank,Austin,Evamore,jason,Chinedu,ayo,lucky,Buchi,lakeside,festus
lurdmanny, All stars and a host of others.

Also my sincere gratitudes also goes to those on the red corner, who were addamant in their disbelief and lack of faith in the SE. There criticisms obviously played a good part in gingering the SE, AMODU and even those of us who had faith in the team.
Megaa,Doyin,Prince,James,Wole,Hopewell,Coachee,Johnson,o s s y,mbanzai, Di Maria, Richard and a host of others.

Like Billion mentioned moments after the victory to all those who once again want Amodu out, "Is it a curse that Amodu should always qualify us and not take us to the world cup?
AMODU is now our MOSES that will take us to the gate of the promise land but never get there.

Take it or leave it, Amodu will win the 2010 NATIONS CUP and take us to the semi finals of the WC if retained. A new coach will not go beyond the first round of the Nations cup nor the World Cup.
Remember Onigbinde?

People like you are lack understanding of football.Nigeria is going to the world cup against teams like germany, brazil,England etc and with your clouded knowledge of football you think this is the team.We lost against Mozambique but for the referee.Amodu should play high standard friendly lets see his record.

But watch your insultive mouth because most people wont take it.

I congratulate all nigerian for the success but with all respect, i think NFA should think of getting a better coach for this team now or else how going to nations cup will be a disgrace, I suggest we get a foreign coach and let him work with someone like Siasia who know the boys better and give him advice on whom to invite for camp so that we can build on our defence, midfield and attack.

We all can see that even with this victory, nigerian did not play well only the boys where determined to win. also we often concede cheap goals.

Anyway dont let us look at today victory and let Amodu continue with this team but to plan ahead today so that we dont cry tomorrow.

change Amodu, get a foreign coach and let a good nigerian coach assist him to get the player to use while he plans the tactics.

In this way, our going to Angola will not be a disgrace and disaster.

How interesting, FIFA.com voted Obafemi Martins as the player of the day for the all the world cup qualifiers played in Africa on Saturday. He deserved that recognition.

Chefo: 2009-11-15 06:11

@ Michael and Osayo, you spoke my church Mind.
Fine we are in SA(And i thank God for that),but must confess,SE have not played any Tactical Football since the qualification series began,We play what is called Disjointed football. No fluidity and its like we play without a game plan or Tactic, its like Amodu just says(You,you and you are u fit, what ROLE do u play for ur club?can u play 90mins)and he puts them on the Pitch)Am going to say two things which are....1)
We qualified fine, but we shld all agree that, its was just toooo scrappy(Not to say we were lucky per say cos we earned the spot)But we didn't play games that wld send shivers tru the spines of Other big teams in Europe, even big teams in Africa,we didn't play convincing matches(Like the eaglets are doing ........Secondly
(just my opinion)i think we need a real tactician, someone, who brings sunshine back to our team, some one who can push our players the extra mile, inspire them and tell them the truth(That they are just bunch of rich guys who need to put more in the game for the next 9months or so)Some one who the NFF or what eva they call their name wld respect. Some one who doesnt take **** from NFF or the players. And PLS AND PLS NFF,the nations cup shld be a test run for the world cup,so i believe any coach taking us to the Nations cup be it Amodu or another coach(even if they **** up)shld still lead us to the world cup.Pls learn from 2002.
Lastly i think this forum shld be a forum where people come together and discuss issues that affect Nigerian football as a whole,a forum where we Agree to disagree,a forum where every body's views are respected but might not be Accepted. So pls let us desist from unnecessary comments on peoples personality.WE NO NEED AM

felix: 2009-11-15 09:09

Please Amodu if u not out to destroy our darling Eagles, please do us a favour and resigned i begged u in the name of God dat helped us qualified. If not its u dat will die of heart attack first b4 the ppl watching ur game.Period

ken gadaffi: 2009-11-15 11:10

Its really absurd to see people calling for the Coach and members of the U-17 to be drafted into the SE.
Its a pity that Nigerians never learn from the past. This is the difference between Africa and the rest of the World.

I repeat once again, Leave AMODU to take us to Nation Cup and we will win it in 2010 and reach at least the Semi - final of the World Cup.

The problem of Nigerian Football is not AMODU nor lack of players, we all know where the problem lies the NFF.

After all said and done, Nigeria topped the group with 12 points against Tunisia's 11 points, The team never lost. In the whole of the African qualifiers, we still post the best records in the qualifiers, forget about those who qualified with two games to spare.

Please the doubters should simply have a share of the humble pie and lets move on.

THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH

ken gadaffi: 2009-11-15 11:18

Mega, 75% of Nigerians who want amodu out may not be necessarily right. 99.9% of Nigerians didnt give AMODU a chance to qualify yet he did it so your statistics is not a yardstick to justify your call for his SACK.

ALL those who want AMODU out should give us better option of Coaches who they think can do better either foreign or local...... I bet none has a better alternative.

Like Billion will say AMODU STAYS

THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH

Nigeria getting results, riding on fortune...
I dont believe in luck, I believe in happenstance..

Nigeria, Super Eagles are not a coordinated team, they are individualists...why, because Amodu has not found consistency and has failed to develop a worthy set up..
However, he still has to get the credit as the coach ho put us through to SA0 and that will never be forgotten..
People say we hate him? No, we dont..We're realists who simply tell the truth as it is...and we may have gotten the results so far but these loop holes will get us down some time..remember the saying ''everyday for the crook, one day for the owner''..
I dont want that to happen to us...I want us to play good football and win games in a worthy manner...We shouldnt be struggling to beat teams like Kenya..

A new coach can change all this...a lot of practice game, friendly matches can help as well in the preparation...in the course of all this, we have to exercize the talent of youth like Obasi, Isaac, the uche brothers, aKpala, who are the rising stars...we must stamp out players like yakubu who wont bring anything to the table..We must create a midfield, every team needs a 'Lassana Diarra' or a 'makelele'...and we have Chris Obodo, where is he???

in essence, we are happy and appreciative to the coach, crew, players and even Mozambique for beating Tunisia, everyone and thing that enabled us make it through to the first ''African world cup'', but now, having ****ysed the problems that made our path to qualification rocky, it is and I feel logical and smart to change things and shape up for a better future..it can be done..peace..
