Somma progressing at Leeds

South African striker Davide Somma continues to make a good impression at English League One side Leeds United as he netted for the reserves in the 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Somma joined Leeds at the beginning of the season from MLS side San Jose Earthquakes, and although he has found first team opportunities hard to come by as United plunder all before them in League One, he has been a hit in the reserve side, netting a brace on debut against Rotherham and now a further goal against the Magpies.
Somma is the latest South African to try his luck with the Elland Road side. It all started with left-winger Albert Johanneson, who joined the club in 1961 and became the first black player to feature in an English FA Cup final when Leeds lost to Liverpool in 1965.
Former Arcadia Sheppards defender Dylan Kerr spent four years at the club, while former Bafana Bafana striker George Dearnaley also had trials with the team in the early 90s.
Then there was the double signing of Phil Masinga and Lucas Radebe in 1994, with the latter going on to become a true legend of the club, captaining the side at the height of their success.
Radebe played over 200 matches for the side, and it would have been more were it not for some crippling injuries that kept him on the sidelines for almost two years.
Leeds currently hold a seven point lead at the top of the League One table, having lost just once in their opening 15 matches and scoring 29 goals in the process.
