Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy has described his return to the national team as a “fresh start”.
The Blackburn Rovers striker is part of the team preparing for Saturday’s international friendly against Japan at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and he spoke openly of his return at the Rand Stadium earlier today.
“I want to start afresh and help Bafana do well in the World Cup," he says. “I have watched every match this year. All that was lacking was experience, somebody like me to stick the ball in the back of the net,” McCarthy told the press.
"Santana would phone and chat to me on a regular basis and maybe that was because I speak Portuguese, but he never explained why he dropped me"

The Cape Town-born striker also revealed he was in constant contact with former coach, Joel Santana, contrary to popular belief that he was not in the Brazilian’s plans, owing to his ongoing problems with Safa.
“I was not playing regularly for Rovers so I thought that was the reason for Santana dropping me, but the strange thing is that Santana would phone and chat to me on a regular basis and maybe that was because I speak Portuguese, but he never explained why he dropped me,” McCarthy explains.
Bafana’s leading scorer of all-time promised some goals on Saturday. “I need only one touch to score and I will show the country I am still the best at what I do,” he promises.
