Daine Klate got an equaliser in the 90th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw for SuperSport United against Platinum Stars on Wednesday night.
The Stars’ goal was scored by Norikazu Murakami.
The Tycoons were certainly not overawed by taking on the reigning League champions and both Norikazu Murakami and Kagiso Senamela let fly with long range shots that forced Emille Baron into action.
Matsatsantsa’s injury and suspension hit squad was dealt a further blow when Monteiro was forced to leave the field with injury just after the half hour mark. Former Black Leopards forward Thabo Mongalo came on to replace the Mozambican.
Six minutes into the second half Daine Klate almost broke the deadlock with a shot from the side of the penalty area that forced Tapuwa Kapini into a fine save.
On the hour mark Platinum Stars took the lead, with Murakami scoring from close range after some uncharacteristic loose defending by SuperSport.
The champions responded to going behind by replacing left-back Tsietsi Mahoa with young striker Thulani Ngcepe, but it was the Tycoons who looked the likelier scorers. Murakami fired a shot just side of goal on 72 minutes and less than 60 seconds later Henrico Botes forced Baron into tipping his shot round the post.
With twelve minutes left, Sheppard had a great chance to double Stars’ lead but he pulled his shot wide of goal from just a couple of metres out.
The midfielder’s miss proved to be costly, as Klate headed home Ngcepe’s cross in the final minute of regulation time to bring SuperSport level at 1-1.
