Urban Warriors fend off Arrows

Ajax Cape Town picked up a point from a 0-0 draw against their MTN8 Cup Final nemesis, Golden Arrows, at Newlands on Sunday.

On a very windy afternoon, the home side enjoyed the better of play overall, albeit marginally, although the KZN side did perhaps have the better goal chances.

Ajax started brightly, enjoying most of the ball possession early on, although all they had to show for their efforts were a couple of shots from Diyo Sibisi inside the opening 20 minutes, one which flew wide from 25 yards and the other which was struck straight at Arrows keeper Helton Da Rocha.

Da Rocha also did well to push Sameegh Doutie’s free-kick over the bar, while a Franklin Cale free-kick came close, but George Maluleka’s final touch went wide.

The visiting side upped the tempo in the final 20 minutes of the first half, with Richard Henyekane striking straight at Ajax keeper Hans Vonk.

In the 40th minute Vonk was again in position to field comfortably, this time from Ntlantla Zothwane, who should have done better with the best chance of the opening stanza.

Following the restart, Ajax again stamped their authority on the game, but as was the case in the first half, they looked out of sorts up front as Sibisi and Maluleka failed to make half chances count.

Zothwane could, however, have given Arrows the lead against the run of play in the 71st minute, but sent his header straight at Vonk after being given time and space at a corner-kick.

With a minute to go Arrows squandered another chance to burgle a later win when Joseph Musonda’s back-post header flew into the side-netting.

Pity Arrows won't be able to defend their MTN8. Them and FS Stars are the PSL draw kings.
