Santos go second

AmaZulu went down 2-0 to Santos at the Ulundi Stadium on Sunday.

A second-half brace from Erwin Isaacs ended the home side's three match unbeaten run.

The approximately 6 000 predominantly local supporters that turned up at AmaZulu’s alternate home venue were quick to voice their approval whenever their favourites made runs towards the opposition goal area.

However, this was not a frequent occurrence in the first half as the visitors, who employed a tight defensive pattern, were quick to scupper Usuthu’s attacking intent.

Santos’ Phikolethu Spelman had two clear-cut chances in this passage of play to break the deadlock, but the striker was wayward with his attempts.

In the 22nd minute he got onto the end of Isaacs' curling cross but miscued his volley. Then, five minutes before the interval, AmaZulu defender Bafo Biyela fluffed a header in his goal area, but with only Nicolas Gindre in the goals to beat Spelman hoofed his shot over the crossbar.

Thabo Mabaso drew an excellent save from Tshepo Motsoeneng with a stinging long-range effort on the stroke of half-time.

Straight after the break the visitors upped the tempo and almost scored when Graham King’s swinging shot from the edge of the penalty area crashed onto the crossbar.

Three minutes later King picked out Bonginkosi Macala with a corner-kick but the defender went wide with his header.

The visitors grew in confidence as the half progressed and were clearly the better team. It came as no surprise when Santos opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, albeit through a defensive error from the home side. Confusion between Gindre and Biyela allowed Isaacs to tap in.

Five minutes from the end King picked up Isaacs' run into the area with a well-weighted pass, and the striker completed the scoring with a tap-in.
