‘Parreira not a Fifa appointment’
‘Parreira not a Fifa appointment’

Rumours doing the rounds have it that Fifa influenced Safa to re-hire Carlos Alberto Parreira and that’s why the latter went against the public’s opinion that a local coach could have been a better option.
When the Brazilian was in charge the first time, before leaving in May last year to be with his sick wife, it was thought that his speculated salary of R1.8-million was bankrolled by the world’s football controlling body.
Now rumours have surfaced that Parreira, who replaced his compatriot Joel Santana, is a Fifa appointment, as it was allegedly the case in his first stint as Bafana Bafana coach.
It is alleged that Fifa influenced the move on both occasions, because they are concerned about the state of South Africa’s senior side.
Safa’s vice-president Mwelo Nonkonyana set the record straight while chatting to KickOff.com today.
“It is not true at all. There are 32 teams going to participate in the World Cup and Fifa cares about all those teams, not just South Africa.
“I once read about what you are telling me now in one of the newspapers and what I can tell you is that we re-hired Parreira because it is in the interests of South African football. We needed an experienced coach,” Nonkonyana says.
“Fifa were never in the picture about this specific matter,” he adds.
If Bafana Bafana don’t make it past the first round in next year’s World Cup, they will become the first host nation to fail to make it past the first round and apparently that’s Fifa’s concern and that’s why Sepp Blatter and company allegedly bankrolled Parreira’s salary and influenced Safa’s decision to rehire him, but again Nonkonyana dismisses this allegation.
“Fifa had no role to play in Parreira’s re-appointment. There was some money Safa once received from Fifa, as advancement to profits that could be made next year.
“Some of the money was used to build Safa House and the other could have been used to finance the organization’s running,” Nonkonyana says.
