Benson Mhlongo will catch the eye for more than just his footballing ability when Orlando Pirates take on Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby on Saturday.
Mhlongo, along with seven other PSL stars, will debut the new adidas Predator X boots in South Africa this weekend – the tenth generation of the famous predator range.
The boots, designed with French football legend Zinedine Zidane, will also be sported by Mhlongo’s Pirates teammate Terror Fanteni, as well as Morgan Gould (SuperSport United), Excellent Walaza (Bloemfontein Celtic), Calvin Marlin, Matthew Booth, Innocent Mdledle (all Mamelodi Sundowns) and Thulani Hlatshwayo (Ajax Cape Town).
Introducing a pioneering PowerSpine technology, the Predator X is distinguished by its unprecedented increase in shooting power of seven percent in comparison to its predecessor. Ball velocity tests in the adidas laboratory demonstrated that the new PowerSpine enables the Predator X to reach a velocity of 110 kilometres per hour which, when compared to other boots, makes a speed difference of almost three metres per second. This could mean the Predator X shot is 26 centimetres behind the goalline while the other shot is saved by the goalkeeper!
International players to sport the new range Predators are Michael Ballack (Chelsea), David Beckham (LA Galaxy), Mark van Bommel (Bayern Munich), Diego (Juventus), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Lucio (Inter), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Raúl (Real Madrid), Daniele de Rossi (AS Roma), Patrick Vieira and Xavi (Barcelona).
