It may not have been the full national team, but South African football will celebrate Amabinneplaas’ 2-0 win against Angola in the Cosafa Senior Challenge nonetheless.
Lennox Bacela and Oupa Manyisa were the unlikely heroes to see the South Africans through to the semifinals.
Amabinneplaas started the better of the two sides and were all over the Angolans in the opening stages, though Ivan Claudio James did come within inches of giving his side the lead on 16 minutes.
Bacela, who has hardly seen any game-time at Orlando Pirates in recent season, proved SA’s most attacking player and almost gave his side the lead just before the break, but for goalkeeper Moises Jose’s heroics.
Joseph Mokhasi had to be alert to deny Osvaldo Candeia early in the second half, before Bacela gave Amabinneplaas the lead on 67 minutes, firing home after a goalmouth scramble.
Jose Vunguidica and Candeia came close to levelling for Angola, before Manyisa made sure of the win on 80 minutes with a brilliant solo effort.
South Africa will now play the winner of the tie between Botswana and Zimbabwe.
SA starting XI: Jacob Mokhasi – Sakhile Mhlangu, Warren Bishop, Gladwin Shitolo, Keamogetse Wolff – Joseph Makhanya, Wayne Matle, Mark Mayambela (Lennox Bacala 46th), Oupa Manyisa (George Lebese 90th), Mduduzi Nyanda – Shakes Ngwenya (Rudzani Ramudzuli 73rd)
