Vanquished Ajax Cape Town returned to the Mother City on Sunday afternoon admitting they botched the tactics in the MTN8 Cup Final.
The 6-0 drubbing by Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Orlando Stadium was a massive setback for the club, who caretaker coach Jan Pruijn admits were on the back foot from almost the first minute.
“It was clear from the first minute that we would be in trouble. We prepared the team in a certain way and our plan was pretty clear. But we didn’t expect Arrows to be so offensive,” Pruijn admits.
Pruijn says the key was that the KwaZulu-Natal side, playing in their first-ever cup final, were hungrier for success on the night.
“We didn’t have what they had in our tanks. In the first five minutes I recognised already that they were hungrier. They had a dream to fight for and played for everything. In 99 percent of the situations in the match, we were not hungry enough to win this game.”
Pruijn said the game fell apart the first goal, which came from Njabulo Mnqana after nine minutes when makeshift left-back Franklin Cale was caught out of possession.
“We told him that for the first 20 minutes he had to keep with the central defenders. But that didn’t happen. But when we went 1-0 down I knew it would be a fight. We lost in the end with some embarrassing moments. For the last 20 minutes I was looking more at the clock than at the game,” Pruijn added.
