Ammabinneplaas jet off to Zimbabwe on Friday with co-coach Khabo Zondo confident that the South African Development team will give a good account of themselves in the COSAFA Senior Challenge next week.
The South African begin the defence of their title against Angola on Monday in Bulawayo starting at 20h00.
The South Africans have been in camp since Monday and have already played two practice matches. In the first clash, they drew 2-2 with a club from Namibia, before going down 2-1 to the Namibian national team on Tuesday night.
“There were plenty of positives despite the 2-1 loss to the Namibian national team. We scored first through Manqoba “Shakes” Ngwenya of Mamelodi Sundowns, but they came back and grabbed two goals which were very soft,” Zondo says.
“It was our mistakes that made us lose the match. But I must say that the two matches we played have really helped us to make a decision on which 20 players to take to the tournament because we only need that number of players.”
Zondo adds that he was impressed by some of the players.
“All the players did very well, but Joseph Makhanya of Orlando Pirates as well as Ngwenya stood head and shoulders above the rest. Those two showed that they are classy players and still have it in them to play top flight football – they showed that they can still offer something.”
As for their crucial clash against Angola, which is the opening match in the tournament, Zondo remains optimistic about the challenge ahead.
“We want to go out there and do our best. We have already requested the videos of Angola, and we hear they are camping in Pretoria at the High Performance Centre. I am told they are quite quick and run a lot, but then again we should not concern ourselves with what the opposition is capable of.
“Our attitude is to impose our own style and try to win the first match to get more confidence for the other matches. So we are not worried, instead we are confident we will come back with positive results,” said Zondo.
