SuperSport United ended Mpumalanga Black Aces’ unbeaten record at home, thrashing the rookies 5-0 at the Puma Rugby Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
In wet and windy conditions, the champions dominated from start to finish.
They got the opener on 30 minutes through Glen Salmon, who tapped home after a cross from the left caused some commotion among the Aces defenders.
Five minutes into the second half, goalkeeper Thomas Richter and his defence were nearly punished as they failed to deal with Klate's dipping corner-kick that was cleared by an alert Gilbert Rudiger on the line.
Moments later, Anthony Laffor had his coach Gavin Hunt shouting from the top of voice in frustration as he was too casual with only Richter to beat inside the box after Felix Mwamba Musasa and Godfrey Nobula failed to intercept a defence-splitting pass from the midfield.
However, United got it right in the 53rd minute when Morgan Gould headed home Jabu Maluleke’s corner to put this game beyond the reach of struggling Aces.
Aces defending was once again exposed when Daine Klate somehow managed to find a loose ball in the penalty box to beat Richter, who got a baptism of fire between the poles for Aces, and the United player registered his brace eight minutes later when drove home a low shot.
Then, with most of the supporters already having made their way out of the stadium, Dario Monteiro scored United's fifth on his first for the club.
