‘Genuine fans will support Eagles’

Posted: 2009-10-09 17:47

Defiant Super Eagles coach Shuaibu Amodu insists that 'genuine fans' will come out on Sunday to cheer and continue to support the team despite their present situation, and said that those who do not come out are not wanted anyway.

An immediate rash of venom-pouring expectedly followed last month's 2-2 draw against Tunisia, which seriously compromised Nigeria's chances of appearing at the 2010 World Cup.

Since then, however, apathy has crept in, with many fans expressing indifference at the team, and a large number prepared to stage a sit at home protest. Amodu says the reaction is no surprise, and hit back at the fair-weather fans.

“I expected that. A good number of Nigerians pretend to know the game and support the game, but they don’t know it,” he fired back. As it is, those who will come to the stadium that day will be our genuine supporters, those who know and love football, and those are the people we want.”

As he warmed to his theme, Amodu went even further, accusing the populace of taking out their frustrations in the country's other failing sectors on the national football team.

“Nobody should extend the disappointment in the fortunes of this country on us in football. Our teams have been playing games all over the world. That football has been played here and there means that we have been the ones carrying the banner of Nigeria all over the world.

“We don’t want to face it, but I am saying it today. The only thing that is representing Nigeria all over the world is football. The only thing we are selling to the world right now is football. And anybody who does not care about the fact that we are doing our utmost best to represent this country does not appreciate it.

“They should ask questions of other organs of this country what they are doing. Why is it only football? Nobody should take the problems of Nigeria and put it on football. In football, like other sports, you cannot get all your results overnight. Along the line you will have disappointing results, and you will also have good ones.

“That is the nature of sport. You will win some, you will lose some and you will draw some.

“This attitude of win at all cost is what we have carried into our political life. That is why when a politician loses an election, he claims it was rigged, and goes to the tribunal. But if he wins, the election was good. Then we keep on fighting ourselves everyday rather than move a step forward.”

Amodu rounded off his fiery tirade with an unflustered look at his immediate future as Eagles boss.

“I have played uncountable matches in my life; I cannot come here and be worried about the consequences of any match. We can only do the best we can and leave the rest to God.

“It is a responsibility for us all, and we are plying our own part. We will leave and other people will come in and play their own part. I think we have done so far so good.”

Why I Have Not Delivered In Eagles Shirt

Super Eagles attacker Chinedu Obasi says the chief reason he has not delivered in the Eagles line up has been that he has been wrongly played by coach Shuaibu Amodu.
The German-based player who is in camp with other members of the Eagles ahead this weekend’s World Cup qualifier against the Mambas of Mozambique told our correspondent after one of the team’s work out.

“Not many people know that I’m being played wrongly in the Eagles team, especially in the last game against Tunisia. I had to fall back most times to win ***** for myself, thus making things difficult for me.”

The former Lyn Oslo striker said in his club he is given a free role in the attack which has made him a better striker.
“In my club, I operate freely and can do almost anything on the pitch with the ball, though with a level of discipline.”

The Olympic silver medalist noted that he is not unmindful of the fact that most Nigerians judge him with his exploits in the 2005 U-20 World Cup and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“I know most Nigerians expect much from me if you consider those two outings…and it has been a burden that I have to carry on this weekend’s encounter against Mozambique.” The Hoffenheim forward however promised to deliver on Sunday.

To your comment Mr Amodu, how better can you react after 2MM monthly.

It is well with Nigeria. The best is yet to come!

Dear Forumites, pls read this ****ysis from the Guardian newspaper today:
http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/sports/article01//indexn2_html?pdate=091009&ptitle=Day%20Samson%20Siasia%20fell%20short%20in%20a%20'battle%20of%20coaches'

And to this reckless tirade by a man who obviously does not care anymore, the best response is silence.

Billion: 2009-10-09 18:17

It's really unfortunate if Amodu said all this. By being defiant & comparing football with politics is arrant nonsense. It seem's that rather than placate Nigerians with soft words and pray to qualify he's being defiant. Does it mean he's not reading the mood of the nation? When the passion of a country is being threatened by the results of your matches & u don't feel...it calls for queries!! Yes Queries not sack!!! AMODU STAYS till the end of the qualifiers.

as for the title to this article i say:
"A GENUINE COACH WILL QUALIFY US"
OR
"A GENUINE COACH WILL NOT HAVE GONE TO TUNISIA LOOKING FOR A DRAW AND HOPING TO WIN AT HOME"
but i want to make it clear, in as much as am not a fan of his tactics, no spark in his attack, no scouting by him and not inviting the right players or playing the right combination of players, no friendlies to prepare.
i still support the SE and hope they win BIG and tunisia looses or ties.
all i can do as a "genuine fan" is pray and support them.

jeeday: 2009-10-09 18:19

Just listen to Amodu. How dare you gave out this kind of comments? i think for once i am disappointed in you. By this statement it means you don't care then why did you went to beg NFF the following day you drew with Tunisia? you are an hypocrites! sorry to say but that is what you are. So the game is if you can't beat them, join them. i pity you. I think you need a speech adviser to advise you what to say and when to say it. Very dissapointing comments. i wish you good luck

Image what Amodu is saying. Is he lecturing us or what? He is talking like he does not care if we qualify or not. Who will he play in attacking midfield in the absence of Mikel? He has refused to invite Obodo, Emmanuel Ekpo, or any other midfielder that can do the job. Who will play that position? My heart is already breaking because I think we will mess up again. Amodu does not seem to know what he is doing.

uzochi: 2009-10-09 18:57

and as for those who are rejoicing that Siasia failed. we know and have seen the articles about how he wasnt given all the support he needed. the players he requested, some couldnt get visa, and so fort.
some predicted 3-0 against him but his team was one or two mistakes away from winning.
sometimes he is too strict, but i feel like he is compensating for the lack of discipline in our country.
his teams play heard and entertaining football, you cant question that. with the right support, he will do great.
and i always support a guy that does things the right way. and SIASIA does things the right way, no bribery/corruption.

uzochi: 2009-10-09 19:00

1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 might not be enough for this match.
this man needs to find a way to win big instead of this his 1-1, 0-0, 1-0, game plans.
should someway, somehow, tunisia slip up {and i pray so} and it comes down to goal differentials, we will need games like this to be a blow-out in our favor.
1-0 win for SE is nothing to be proud of.
period

@JEFF
be careful what you wish for. Amodu is a fat man and might actually cry you a river with that basin he has called his stomach. {eating all our money}
remember when we tied the game agaist tunisia, he "kinda" begged not to be fire. i know you remeber him saying something to the lines of "give me another chance". so he sill cry for his job again, this time, he might cry you a river. SO HOPE YOU CAN SWIM OR HAVE A BOAT.

Ismail : 2009-10-09 19:55

Amodu Sharrap, I say shut up and stop diverting attention. If you are a man of honour, you should have resigned after failing to beat the Tunisians. I am disappointed in you. Your recent statements actually confirms reports from different circles that you are arrogant and lousy. You seem to be very forgetful or a very slow learner and at your age, I must confess that is very disastrous. After all you earn 2mm a month so why would you not roll your mouth left, right and center after failing us. U are a big shame and disgrace to the country

I'm loving Amodu every minute. He has started displaying his true self, arrogant and lousy. He displayed this same attitude when we beat Kenya, calling journalists who asked him questions names in a postmatch conference. I like him more because he has just told us to jump off a bridge. He has just told us to go and worry about our myriad of problems dat if we think football is our escape route that him and his cohorts in PDP have decided that we start facing our real problems and stop daydreaming. I am loving him right now because he has just shown me he will be the next INEC chairman (Iwu dey learn work for where Amodu dey). He is never ready to accept responsibilities for his failures.
I plead with Nigerians to go and watch d match in their tens of thousands with bags of pure water so we can stone this arrogant, shameless baboon.

Which you are definately part of.

uzochi: 2009-10-09 23:14

@LEONARD
let me tell you ALL what is happening. i am sorry to say this, but Amodu has every right to say what he said.
like you said Leonard, he talks as if the job is his birth right, so think about it. with his performance, no scouting, going into Tunisia looking for a draw, and all these, he still had the guts to say such things.
so lets think, my people say "when you see a kid dancing on the street road, listen bcos something/somebody is playin him music in the bush" also, "no smoke without fire".
with that said, Amodu just confirmed my worst fears, he is not goin to get fired. for him to be soo bold, somebody in the NFF must have guaranteed him his job, win or loose.
somebody in NFF who set up Siasia for failure is happy that now no one will call for siasia to take Amodu's job. so party on Amodu, your boyz in NFF have guaranteed you ur job, what can the rest of us do? I NO BLAME YOU.

You people criticize everything good, everything bad, and everything in-between. What kind of people are these? You complain even about the tiniest and meaningless things. Don’t you people ever get tired of it?

Amodu’s comparison of football to politics is dead right, but some of you obviously don’t yet have the intelligence to see his ****ogy. He was simply pointing out one of the typical ills that continues to destroy the nation. If he had said otherwise (or anything at all), most of you will still find a reason to criticize.

I often wonder what kind of children Nigerian parents are raising over there. No discipline, no respect for anybody, no respect for law, no nothing, just crazy bad.

This forum must be full of children. I thought we’re supposed to abandon our childhood ways, and behave like adults when we grow up? Do most of you really know what it means to be an adult? I don’t see mush of that here.
Only babies cry about everything, and I can’t tell any difference between most of you here and them.

ken gadaffi: 2009-10-10 09:17

Frank talk from Amodu..... when a man is pushed to the wall he surely will fight back.

I agree with him, the genuine fans will surely go and give their support.

Many Nigerians support the premier league teams and even when they perform badly, they still get our support, why cant we transfer such support to our national team. Yeah, the fair weather attitudes need to be jettisoned.

Fortune: 2009-10-10 09:44

Fellow Nigerians, the problem we are having in our national team is the players. None of them possesses that fighting spirit which the players during the time of JJ and Oliseh possessed. This players don't play to win a match they only entertain. None of our midfielders join attack of shoot on the post. If you can agree with me it is better we do not come to the world cup than to come and disgrace ourselves. When attackers are forward, the midfielders need to close them up than to be standing in the midfield looking if they will score. (THIS IS NOT FOOT BALL)When you are watching other teams you can also see their midfielders inside the opposition 18 yard box helping the strikers. If you don't suppress your opponent, push them back, how do you aspect to score?

Let Mr. Shuaibu instruct his midfielders to join attack if they want to succeed. Lampard, Garrard, Michael Ballack, Fabregas, Yaya Ture , Essien and so on, all of them use to score for their teams and National team because when their attackers is with the ball you can see them inside the opposition 18 yard box.

Well Amodu is doing what he has to do, he knows that he doesn't have the ability to qualify SE for world cup anymore, he knows that his job is over immediately after the last 2 matches, I saw his statements as a conceding statement. Amodu like any other Nigerian will never admit to failures, they will defend themselves at any screw ups no matter what happened. IBB and Abacha would still tell you that they were the best rulers Nigeria ever had. So Amodu is just being a normal Nigerian and at the same time conceding to the fact that he has failed to qualify the super chickens or super turkeys to the world cup.

National pride now has to take a back seat, if Nigerian football is ever to reach those dizzying heights of the 90s, when the Super Eagles were rated by FIFA among the top five countries in the world.

Every country would love for its own indigenous coach in charge of its football destiny, but in the real world we have an Italian in charge of England, a Brazilian leading South Africa, a Frenchman calling the shots in Cameroon and a Serbian, who has qualified Ghana to the World Cup with two rounds of matches to spare.

The Golden era for Nigeria at full international level was in the mid-90s, when Dutchmen Clemens Westerhof and Jo Bonfrere tinkered the Super Eagles and later the Olympic team.

Nigeria first took a chance on Westerhof, an unknown Dutchman, late in 1989, but it was not until 1994 that he finally delivered.

In between that time, he worked tirelessly hard with players from the local league - Daniel Amokachi, Ben Iroha, Uche Okechukwu, Finidi George, Tijjani Babangida - to transform them into polished articles by the time the Eagles landed their second Africa Cup of Nations trophy in Tunis.

It needed five long years of hard work for Westerhof to finally get it right. But was it worth the wait? Most certainly, as Nigerians finally got a team they could count on, a team they could be proud of.

What do Nigerians now have? A team that is two matches away from not featuring at next year's World Cup as well as two coaches, Shuaibu Amodu and Samson Siasia, who are only too happy to blame their players for tactical indiscipline when things go wrong.

I usually do not insult people but this Amodu of a Guy has got the nerve to call us Nigerians fools for his stupidity...I do not blame him,it is because of the kind of country we have found ourselves where those that have little or no knowledge on how to run an organisation finds himself as a captain of such industry...If Amodu thinks that because of his grey hair that makes him white then I will like to bring to his attention that I have a goat at home that has white hair.

i will not be a party to your failure Amodu.i will not come and watch you and your super chickens. when have you ever impressed with these current set of players?consistent underperformance all the time is what you have to offer.Until you go to the local league to build your own team, instead of these overbloated ready made set that don't have any inkling of national pride in them to fight for their fatherland.shame on them for collecting the bonus after that match.look for players that have hunger, ready to fight till the end do you know that you can lose honourably?

Why do we worry over nothing.....? Why do we lose faith so easily.......? Football is very funny at times and you can get an unexpected result. This weekend results will surely shock many people even though the world cup ticket may not be decided in our group. There is still every possibility that Kenya may force tunisia to a draw while Nigeria will beat mozambique to set a thrilling finale in the last group qualifiers. And even though that doesn't happen the finale will still be intriguing as Tunisia will be facing the snakes in Maputo.

Hey guys, lets not loose faith in the team yet, they can still turn the tides

THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH

Unfortunately I expected to be insulted by some uncivilized individuals for my previous post.
Those who insulted me fell for the oldest trick in the book. They identified themselves since I did not mention anybody’s name in that post. Now we all know that they are the most immature in the forum.
I must say I expected insults from more than just two people. So some credit goes to the forum.

If anyone supports or agrees with something Coach Amodu does or says, it is their choice to do so. No one should be insulted for supporting Amodu or any other coach; and no one should be insulted for not supporting him either.

It will be a waste of my time to respond in kind to those who insulted me over my post. Read their posts, they can’t even construct a decent sentence. I don’t expect intellectual reasoning from the uneducated.

If anyone wants their views respected, they must first learn to respect other people’s views. How can one condemn others people’s views and expect the same people to accept theirs? It doesn’t work that way Nigerians.

Ogbuke should not worry after-all no body have a permanent Jersey for supper eagle for now. the coaches are trying to qualify the Nigerian for World first.

But i wonder why Nigeria did not have second eleven like other countries. and i also suggest that, there is a polities in the Nigeria football; if not i wonder what Yakubu is still doing there.
