Joel Santana was in a belligerent mood at his pre-match press conference in Oslo on Thursday but looked a man under immense pressure as he gave some bizarre answers to questions posed by the small media pack.
On the three assessors appointed to come and watch his team in action on Saturday:
“I’m not worried about that. I feel stronger because all the speculation will stop that I don’t speak with the (local) coaches. And we will have more coaches to speak to about Bafana Bafana and that will give me more support.”
On allowing the assessors into the change room and to talk to the players:
“In football, the coach is the number one. The only person who speaks is the coach. I’m the coach.”
On Bafana Bafana’s losing form:
“I would have been really concerned if I had the games and my team had played badly. But I can see that my team is improving each game that we play. I need hard games and I asked for these hard games.”
On World Cup hosts doing badly before the tournament:
“Germany were under a lot of pressure before they hosted the World Cup and yet they did well in the tournament. It is normal (for a host nation) to do badly before the World Cup).”
On the game against Norway:
“South Africa played one of their best games ever against Norway. We have good memories of the game (in match at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace). Norway is a side that plays well in midfield, that has a good counter attack but we’ll try to play our football. We want to have the ball and use or speed.”
On winning and losing:
“I always tell my players we can lose or we can win but as long as we play beautiful football. It’s important to win but it’s more important to win well. We all want to see beautiful football.
“You have to remember that I come from a country that has won the World Cup five times and provided some of the world’s best players. I am here to make South Africa play like Brazil. That’s the reason why South Africa appointed a Brazilian to train their team.”
