Naïve defending from Amajita has seen the national Under-20 side slump to a 4-0 defeat against Hungary at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt on Wednesday night.
After a strong first half performance in which they were unlucky not to score, Amajita fell apart after the break and allowed the Hungarians to rack up the goals.
Kermit Erasmus and Thulani Serero both had excellent chances to give South Africa the lead in the first period, but lacked composure at the vital point.
Hungary took the lead four minutes into the second half when Simon’s shot was well saved by Ngobeni, but Zsolt Korcsmar reacted quickest to knock home the rebound.
And it was 2-0 just four minutes later when Collen Zulu brought down Marko Futacs and Vladimir Koman converted from the spot.
It went from bad to worse for Amajita as Andras Debreceni had the simplest of headers from a free-kick after he was left all alone by the South African defenders to make the score 3-0 to Hungary.
The humiliation was complete when Adam Presinger curled home a free-kick from inside the penalty-area after Ngobeni was adjudged to have handled a back-pass.
South Africa must now beat Honduras in their group match on Saturday evening to have any chance of reaching the Last 16.
