PSL points finger at Jordaan

The Press briefing, which was meant to be chaired by Irvin Khoza today at the PSL offices in Parktown, started 45 minutes late and the events that unfolded during the briefing were as uncomfortable as the long wait.
The message sent to the media had stated that Khoza was going to personally address the media on an urgent matter, but when PSL CEO Kjetil Siem kick-started the briefing, there was no sign of Khoza, in the process angering the media, who packed the room.
The PSL, as an affiliate of Safa, is clearly not happy with football’s mother body, Safa, and Danny Jordaan.
In a statement released to the media, in the middle of today’s PSL executive meeting, it is clear Jordaan is accused of dirty tactics in the run during the elections.
The PSL’s letter, sent to Safa CEO Raymond Hack on September 14 and never received a response, according to the PSL, reads in parts as follows: “We have read with concern the comments which have appeared in the media regarding the annual general meeting of the association of 26 September 2009… the references in the media of persons standing for election who do not appear to be eligible to stand let alone be elected is particularly concerning.
“Neither Dr [Danny] Jordaan nor Mr [Veli] Mahlangu is eligible to stand, let alone be elected. Dr Jordaan and Mr Mahlangu cannot want to contribute to the association by standing for election while at the same time ignoring the founding documents [constitution] of the very same association they say they want to serve.
“Dr Jordaan is also an employee of the association [in his capacity as the 2010 World Cup’s LOC Chief Executive]. He himself made plain at the meeting of the association of 27 September 1997 and [the PSL quotes him as follows]: “No person employed full-time by Safa could stand for election to the Safa Committee and this would take care of representatives, democracy, transparency and accountability as agreed to at the Soccer Indaba.
“It is thus worrying to see Dr. Jordaan mentioned as a candidate… if he is committed to the constitution he must clearly be mistaken about his eligibility. Or is this why the media continually refers to another candidate [Kirsten Nematandani] being a back-up in case Dr Jordaan is precluded? If it is the latter, then this is inexcusable conduct on the part of a person supposedly supportive of the constitution and its aims. But it is not our intention to debate the rights and wrongs of the matter. We simply want the constitution to be respected and applied… please respond to us immediately and confirm that neither Dr Jordaan nor Mr Mahlangu are standing for election,” the statement reads.
The PSL received no response as stated earlier and this could mean that they will challenge the legitimacy of the elections in their next Board of Governors meeting.
The PSL confirmed today that the date for the board meeting will be decided during the ongoing executive meeting.
However, Jordaan told KickOff.com earlier today that he withdrew for the interest of football in this country, though it is alleged, as stated by the PSL, that Jordaan, withdrew at the last minute knowing his faction, the Football Transformation Forum, already convinced regions to vote for the FTF faction by fronting Jordaan to garner votes, knowing Nematandani would be the compromised candidate for the position.
But Jordaan gave a different version, when speaking to KickOff.com earlier today.
“We had told the whole world we would have the elections during the AGM and I thought if I am the obstacle to having that election, then I’d withdraw, which I did. I was not going to be used as an excuse not to have the elections! So it was going to be a straight fight between the two, Khoza and Nematandani,” Jordaan said earlier.
The question now could be; why did Khoza withdraw when Jordaan, who was allegedly not eligible, had already withdrawn?
Did he realise that FTF’s alleged tactic had worked against him; therefore he knew FTF had enough regions to win the elections?
Siem was forced by the media to go and get Khoza, but Khoza told Siem he wasn’t going to comment.
Hack was not available to confirm why the PSL never received a response for the letter they sent on September 14.
