Siasia blames strikers, ref for loss

Siasia blames strikers, ref for loss

Posted: 2009-09-29 09:50

Flying Eagles coach Samson Siasia turned on his strikers after the team lost their second game on the bounce at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in Egypt.

The Nigerians were beaten 2-0 by Spain despite, once again, dominating their opponents and Siasia said it was down to his forwards to put away the numerous opportunities the team created.

"I believed we had more chances in the first half but I don't know why our strikers always go to sleep. I don't really know how many chances we need to score a goal.

"It is so sad that we have strikers that can't even score goals. If you don't score goals, you can't win any match," the former Nigeria international lamented.

Siasia's was equally unhappy to see his team concede a soft penalty and another player walk off with a red card for the second consecutive game, especially when a Spanish player got off with only a yellow card for a similar offence as that which got Haruna Lukman sent off in the opening game, and he did not spare the referee.

"I don't know what is going on may be the referees don't want us to go to the next round of the competition. It was obvious that the penalty given to the Spanish team was not a penalty. It is just ridiculous."

Nigeria have a slim chance of advancing as best losers if they beat group whipping boys Tahiti, and results from elsewhere go their way.

It's a pity that you chose those same strikers. You are the coach and you must have watched them before selecting them. These your strikers, have they ever scored a goal before? I don't even think we can get even half a goal past Tahiti. It's all over for this team

bomsky: 2009-09-29 10:22

The boys tried!!! Siasia is a wonderful coach. We lost both games due to poor officiating, ill luck and inexperience on the part of the strikers. In the game against Spain, what was left was for our boys to throw the ball into the Spanish net with their hands. We kept on missing begging chances. I tire!!! We will still qualify and go very far in this competition. I believe in the boys and Siasia!! Up Nigeria!!!

Siasia, you are still the best. Even the best of coaches do not win all the time. I only pray that we beat Tahiti and may be qualify as best losers.

Bayode: 2009-09-29 10:31

Bomsky, I share your patriotic but incurable optimism that our boys will still qualify for next round. This is divine revelation!

Tim: 2009-09-29 10:43

We will still qualify for the second round as one of the best 4 losers. Remember 2005 was not equally smooth. All the same its been a dissapointing performance so far. The onus lies with the coaching crew to make this one of the fairy tails of the U-20 world cup.
As an aside something needs to be done about the officiating seen so far. The inconsistencies has been shockingly beyond believe.

OGS: 2009-09-29 10:44

Sia One has said it himself, the referees have a grand plan to fustrate us, i am happy he was able to speak out, the truth must be told but these set of boys are truely below average.

Bob : 2009-09-29 10:52

@ Bomsky
Looks like you don't know anything about football. Why are you holding brief for Siasia who lost two games without a goal but you guys insult Amodu who has better reults.?How can you say FE lost two games bcos of bad officiating ?Can't you see a horrible team ? Siasia has failed becos he was brought in to turn a bad team into a good one but ...????????

OG: 2009-09-29 11:03

Siasia. I cant believe you are saying this. Is it what you will tell us if you are in charge of SE. Assume responsibilities. You are the coach. Win or lose you are in cahrge and it is your team.

OG: 2009-09-29 11:04

Buchi: 2009-09-29 11:07

Responsible coaches I know accepts the result and dont blame his boys. Two matches. No goal. No result. And you say it is your boys and ref. Wake up coach.

Frank: 2009-09-29 11:20

“We have confidence and we have the players to do us proud. The training camps in Qatar and Spain have helped the team greatly and we are heading to Egypt believing we can conquer,” said Siasia, a former World Cup star.

This is the worst ever side and performance in Nigeria's appearance in FIFA age competitions or any other for that matter aside from the female categories. Siasia, could not do anything simply because 'everyday is not christmas'. Let it be on record that Siasia was in charge of this disgraceful lot! Thank God Amodu is yet to lose a competitive match!

Frank: 2009-09-29 11:24

@Mike, with ur stupidity of unimaginable proportion u think I have time for u and Siasia? U still have not figured out that the Green Eagles are defunct. Perhaps Siasia will handle them while Amodu or any one else worthy will handle the Super Eagles.

sly1: 2009-09-29 11:25

Sorry SIASIA I am a biig fan but you should cricize your players in private. You dont see Wenger or Ferguson calling out their players in public. Handle this in house and be diplomatic in public. Yes I agree with you thr refereeing was atleast attrocious.

We have 2 problems. These Eagles cant shoot. sia1 SHOULD LOCK THESE GUYS IN A GYM TOMORROW AND NOT LET THEM OUT UNTIL THEY CAN HIT THE TARGET 80/100 FROM 20YARDS EACH PLAYER. Yes including the defenders(after all Chibuzor Okonkwo scored from almost 35 yards in Beijing 2008).Second problem NFF should never let a European referee call the next game against Tahiti. It is obvious they have an agenda

sly1: 2009-09-29 11:34

Sorry ooooh. Criticize

For those who are happy about this teams misfortune, you are simply unpatriotic. When they qualify, you cant share in the glory. If the Eagles fail,Sia1 fails and we all fail. Maybe NFF will then give him the Super Eagles job because they love to reward FAILURE

oscar : 2009-09-29 11:37

In as much as I give credit to Siasia's ability as a coach, I want to believe there is no difference between the result Bosso posted and the result of this team so far. Result wise, it seems that Bosso is the coach of the team.

Ighalo should accept most of the blame of this team. If he had scored that begging opportunity in the first 5 mins of the game, the story might av been different, not that the Spaniards played better. Nigeria still had most of the possession of the game.

I wonder why he left Rabiu on the bench this far. He should have been played in the first match.

Anyway, our hope lies on the other third played teams in the other groups. All things been equal, we could still qualify.

Sorry Siasia, as Frank said, xmas is not everyday. You can still redeem your image, if we are lucky to beat Tahiti by more than 5 goals.

ado: 2009-09-29 11:52

how many nigerian players where disqualified as a result of age cheating by fifa 15 if u were not aware and Sia Sia was forced to select this palooka team dont blame the poor coach

Babatunde: 2009-09-29 12:47

I spent the whole evening last night in a depressed mood trying to figure out, if there was still racial discrimination very eminent in the society, or if the black continent is just leaving itself in an inferior position of low esteem. I was so down and crest-fallen that my wife (white) kept asking what the problem was. I narrated the experience the flying eagles were going through in Egypt and tried to blame the white race for persistent racial discrimination. Yes she said to me, "that is right, but what are you (black race)doing about it". A while later my nigerian friend called and wanted to discuss the match. I was quick to point out the biased referees. Why should Haruna get a red card for an offence not even as severe as that N****wo suffered. That spaniard almost broke his ankle. Then again the referee should not have given a penalty as it was really obvoius that Rabiu was trying to cover the space and not commit a foul and the spaniard set himself up to be fouled. As if that was not enough he immediately showed Salami a red card from just shielding himself from the opponent. My friend replied by saying "You yourselves are the instruments of your downfall. The boys sometimes were playing as if they did not have the class expected at this level. I mean look at what is happening at Kano with the UAE squad threathtening to boycott the U-17 World Cup because of the conditions".
I was beginning to see the situation from a new perspective. I had observed also yesterday that while the defence was solid and N****wo was doing a yeoman`s job in the midfield, the strikers wasted every effort that they got. There is still this African mentality that we still have to rid ourselves of and is quite difficult to cope with. We try to look good even at the cost of loosing. The forward line played as if there was nothing at stake. In this present day soccer, you cannot expect to shoot from anywhere and expect the ball to go into the net. Most crosses from the wings were executed without really being obvious of how many players were in position to utilise them. At a point I saw Osanga making a cross with only Odion standing in position and about 5 spaniards around him. What are the probabilities here? Sometimes the crosses were so lame that even if we got a head to it, it would kindly fall to the feet of the spanish goalie. For me this is not constructive thinking and planning on the part of the Nigerian players. It showed a sense of non-commitment. The first few passes that the spaniards stringed together resulted in their goal and you could how they were using their head to beat the offside tactic, Nigeria was heavily relying on. Fran Merida was just not using his feet, he was using his head, and this is why he plays for ****nal and Odion Ighalo has to go to the third league in Spain. Siasia can only guide but he cannot get unto the field and do it himself. His class as world-class coach still showed in the matches - he just has the wrong wards. We have not been disgraced but only humbled. Even if we fly out of this tournament, Siasia has once again proved his mettle. I ascertain here that he is the best caoch we have in Nigeria of date. His technical acumen is enormous in comparison to any coach in Nigeria.

The problem of us the black race does not belong here in sports as it is a socio-economic problem, so I will not say much other than we need to reflect on our image in the world and what the other races think about us. We should not have bidded for the U-17 World Cup in the first place, but because of cohorts like Adamu planning to embezzle funds, they decided to drag our integrity in the mud.

biodun: 2009-09-29 12:52

What a disappointment, Excellent coach, good team spirit, worst strikers, bias referee. What a match!!!. I tire ho.

malambula.madida: 2009-09-29 12:57

Have you checked as to how many times the coach has used the words I DON`T Know. Its a pity even the coach do not have a solution.

Niceguy: 2009-09-29 13:01

Siasia tried on his part but our strikers refused to take their chances, they played good football more the super eagles do, the absence of Kinsley Udoh and Christiantus have cost us qualifying to the next round.

mosco: 2009-09-29 13:03

siasia must go, he doesnt have any solution. Technically, he knows nothing about ftball.

He must go.

SIASIA MUST GO, SIASIA HAS NO SOLUTION TO NIJA FOTBALL.

mosco: 2009-09-29 13:10

AMUDO IS THE SOLUTN. ATLEAST HE HAS NOT BEEN DISGRACE LIKE THIS. LET US FACE THE FACT. SIASIA GOT HIS RESULT B4 FROM A TEAM THAT WAS ASSEMBLED BY SOMEBODY ELSE.

NOW HE HAS ASSEMBLED HIS OWN, HE FAILED AND DISGRACE NIJA RECORDED AS REGARDS TO U-20

mosco: 2009-09-29 13:12

AMUDO SHOULD EXTEND HIS INVITATION TO OBIORA N****WO, THIS GUY IS DAM GOOD IN MIDFIELD. I THINK NIG SHOULD REPLACE MIKEL WITH THIS GUY

Niceguy: 2009-09-29 13:15

mosco
Do u expect the coach to go and score by himself? he will do his part as the coach and is left for the players to do their part too in the field of play.

Richard: 2009-09-29 13:41

If Siasia is complaining that his strikers let him down. he has also let nigeria down himself by assembling this disgracefulerformance. How can all six strikers he chose all become terrible over night? he was simply arrogance in his selection of players and the team have only got what they deserve.
Stop blaming the referee, did he tell the player to raise albow at the face of the spainard? what happen long before the red card and the penalty? no tactical plan on what to do with the ball, is that the fault of the referee?
Siasia has been over-rated, it went to his head and the reality has come to him early to still keep his head down to learn the rope. This humbling experience is good for him.

@ Frank (Fake or Original)

Don't compare Amodu to Sia1. Fine Amodu has not lost a competitive game but we are almost not qualifying for the world cup. How do you explain that???

What we saw yesterday was a team good coach & unpolished players with good potentials. I believe with new invites & more time, this team will be very strong.

Lets us all try to embrace the positives in failures, it'll definitely prepare us well for the future. Unfortunate, we still have the bigger problem 'NFF'.

So many things against Nigeria these days, we better look inward rather than outward and change our ways so we can start receiving the God's blessings and good luck. Certainly there is racism in the world and soccer is not exception, as a black nation we must excel in everything we do so as not to let racism keep us down.

If we have come out and converted all our chances even with referee's gift we could have come on top like 5:2. Our boys are just not good enough!
Siasia inherits an average team which I don't think can score a goal even against Tahiti on our independence day!!!

Profy: 2009-09-29 14:25

One more curse for those who want Siasia to Fail, U will never know Succeed in ur life (Amen) bcos u wish others wat u wish urself. Am just quoting the Law of KAMA here. For God sake, is it Siasia fault to have achieve success in his past engagement with the National team. I knew majority of Nigerian coaches will be happy now bcos they r so envious of the way this man is been celebrated. Real and patrotic Nigerians appreciate good gift from God. Siasia is a gift to this country hate him or like him. Even NFF gave him this job reluctantly bcos of the pressure and he took the Job out of patrotism. Not because he has anything to PROVE again. U will forevevr remain a great and Patrotic Nigerian in my heart. Dont worry, let ur enemy throw stone at u, they will be ashame at the end. Did he ask for Amodu's Job. The answer is NO. Who is clamouring for hi m to handle SE. The answer is Passionate and Football loving Nigerians who saw great technical ability in this Man compare to that of Mourinho and Hidink. This are the 2 best coaches i respect a lot in World Football. One is Charismatic and the other is technically gifted. In Siasia, u find this two quality attributes. Anytime am watching Nigeria team under Siasia, am confident. No heart attack. even if we r losing, i will go home happy bcos he will never be disgrace and humiliated. It is not about not lossing any match, it is abt how ur Team Plays. Are they playing like a Pregnant Women or they r Playing Physical, Technical, Cohesive Football above all r they playing with true Nigerian Spirit with deteminal and reslience?.
My Prayer God u said in ur Word, that wen my father and mother forsake me , u accept me. Many Nigerians have forsake this Man now, Please oh Lord accept him and prove the new convert of critism wrong. God this is the time to act. Support this man to the very end. He has done wat u expect of any man which is Dilligent and Hardworking. He has done his best for this great Nation under the circumstances he find himself. He accept this Job even wen he has nothing to PRove. Oh LORD give him this day. He is the hope of Nigerian Football. Dont let his enemy rejoice. In jesus name I pray (Amen)

Prof.: 2009-09-29 14:25

Mosco, sorry to say, but your statement looks STUPID! Siasia's first team (2005) was actually his own (All the way from the African championships in Benin to the world cup proper and then, the Olympics of 2008) and he performed well. This time he was brought in as an emergency coach to handle a combination of Bosso's and Tella's boys. He has done well. Given the time frame to operate, he would do excellently well as the coach of the Super Eagles. I say this without mincing words. Great coaches fail sometimes. In case guys like you and Stilo don't know, let me educate you.

1. Scolari is a world cup winning coach and yet failed in Chelsea
2. Carlos Alberto Parreira is a world cup winning coach (1994) yet he failed in France 98 without winning a single match for Saudi Arabia
3. Sven Goran Erickson after performing creditably for Galatasaray became a mediocre for the English National team
4. Berti Vogts won the European Championships in 1992 only to fail woefully with Scotland and Nigeria
5. Louis van Gaal was a huge success at first in Barcelona and yet failed woefully later
6. World cup winner, Marcelo Lippi could not excel in the recently concluded confederations cup
7. Even Alex Fergurson, veteran of champions league victories lost the last year's finals to "Little boy" Pep Guardiola. Is Guardiola now a better coach than him?

When I was a child, I thought and acted like a child but now in old age, I have learnt to read between the lines and put away childish frivolities.

Prof.: 2009-09-29 14:27

Sorry, Berti Vogts won in 1996.

OG: 2009-09-29 14:45

My dear coach made name with over aged players....now, how far?.... The fear of FIFA on over age players.....results are proving to be the only test. The truth about our over rated coaches is showing. He who have ears .....let them hear. And only who with eyes will see. Leave sentiments.

kessy: 2009-09-29 14:48

This forum is very bias and sentimental. Some loud mouth here were very quick in condemning Amodu and Bosson for committing the same crime Siasia is committing now with the FE. Guess what, the same knuckle heads hear are now singing songs of praises on Siasia whose Egypt U20 team is now comparable to Chile 87 FE. It’s a shame.

mosco: 2009-09-29 15:34

Prof, you're busy resiting records without you knowing that the so called 2005 team, was someone else team that started from u-17 before siasia took over. So go back to record and correct urs.

And what am saying in the fact is that all nja coaches doesnot have anything technically regarding to winning matches and all members of nfa and sprt minister pertaining to ftball should resign, from there head to the messanger

mosco: 2009-09-29 15:37

prof, mind u that bert vogts did not fail, but was forced out by the glass hus. he called all the best legs nig has as of then, and the same thing that happened is still happening today in amodu era. the sE are not serious, infact if vogts was left to continue, nig would have gotten a better and a winning team by now, instead of sacking him

sly1: 2009-09-29 15:37

@Lankyboy same to you. Return back to sender. Just to be clear, I wont touch you with a ten-foot pole.

Being objecyive is seeing something wrong say it and also offer a solution if you can do better. I do not respect coaches who blame the same players they trained and selected to prosecute a game. This IS BECAUSE THE RESPONSIBILITY IS COLLECTIVE = YOU WIN TOGETHER, YOU ALSO LOSE TOGETHER. Amodu tried to extricate himself from the failure of his team by blaming them. I do not support that. That is a failures mentality. It is only a bad workman that blames his tools. No matter what, Sia 1 should live and die by his decisions. These Eagles are battling for him and Nigeria, nobody should throw them under the bus. They want to win but they are too nervous in front of goal.

Solution more practise is needed.

Frank: 2009-09-29 15:39

@Fash, I suggest u make up ur mind before typing. There's absolutely no positive from what is happening in Egypt. If it can be justified in any way so can Amodu's case. Siasia has played 2 competitive matches losing both with no goals scored. Not even Amodu can beat that.

Doctor: 2009-09-29 16:33

Until now, I have respected Samson Siasia for his body of work and have even advocated that he be elevated to the position of coach of the senior team. He has just lost my endorsement. The performance of this crew in the on-going U-20 World Cup is mediocre to say the least. He should accept full responsibility for this and stop passing the buck. He picked the same strikers he now accuses of ineptitude. For Christ's sake, he assembled that awful team! As for the game officials, Siasia has been around long enough to know what the deal is. When you are back and African, you are judged by a different set of rules. The bottom line is that just like Amoudu several weeks ago, Siasia has failed millions of soccer-loving Nigerians. I will love to see the day that a Nigerian will admit it when he has failed to perform well at an assigned task and simply resign but I know it is wishful thinking on my part.

john: 2009-09-29 16:38

Thank you very much Olumadu for your very positive input here. All those who have seen nothing good in the flying eagles and are already condemning the coach and his boys will have to eat their words come Saturday when all the first round matches must have been played and the flying eagles advance to the next stage. It is a pity that some of the forumites can not put their hatred for Siasia aside and just be patriotic and support these boys who have giving their all in the last two matches despite all the bad officiating.

Angel: 2009-09-29 17:37

The boys were not bad, but I suggest next time they should be taken to a competition that doesn't require scoring, then we'll definately come back with a gold. How in the world can we get beaten by venezuela!!! With what I saw the Vez team can't even beat my High school football team of Segun Dairo, Igedi, Badmus, Fatai, Ojeahere etc @ Loyola in those days, However, the officiating in both matches were against nigeria but that's still not an excuse for us not finding the net in 180mins at a world cup. Well may be it's a good sign, you sometimes need a humble pie to come back to reality upon on the shakara noise before they left...and may be it's not even the boys there's something seriously wrong with Nigeria spiritually so a soccer game is just an outward manifestation...God where is our David!!!

Hopewell: 2009-09-29 18:01

I don't have issues with those calling for Siasia's head or doing whatever with his name but the fact remains: SIASIA is far better than Amodu and the other coaches combined in Nigeria. Amodu's SE players are far better in terms of quality than these bunch of mediocres still, Amodu has been fumbling and wobbling. He is a clown! Going to Europe to beg for pounds all in the name of "monitoring" players. SHAME!!! Amodu's job, so far in the World Cup journey is to sit down and watch the SE play, just like any other football loving fan.
The problem with Siasia is attitude. Siasia cannot handle the SE players with this kind of attitude. Osaze Odemwingie had issues with him at Beijing Olympics. Likewise some other notable pros. So, he should learn to treat players as men and not boys or his children. Also, he should learn not to drop his best players because of ego clash, replacement or not. I love Siasia's knowledge of the game but these set of players are just too mediocre.
Verdict: Siasia remains the best Nigerian Coach. However, he needs to assist a tested and well proven Technical Adviser for the SE's job. The reason being that, he will DEFINITELY drop some excellent players because of EGO CLASH and also criticize them publicly if they lose a match. Siasia, that is a big minus on your attitude!!! A foreign coach would not do that because he wants result and he doesn't care about the status of the players. Whoever merits to play will be fielded, PERIOD!!!

first and foremost, we need to get our house in order.we lack morals and are shallow minded.we nigerians think we are invicible, the game against venezuela should had been won, the guys werent purposefull enough. to be frank with you all we dont deserve to be at the world cup neither do we have any business in the next round of the u21 world in egypt.maybe when we start appreciating and treating one another with respect we might actually start to do well in sports in general.

NIGERIANS DO NOT GET IT AT ALLLLL!! THE PROBLEM LIES WITH THE GENERAL ATTITUDE NIGERIANS HOLD FOR THEMSELVES AS PEOPLE OF A NATION CALLED NIGERIA. NO MATTER HOW TALENTED OR GIFTED WE ARE AS INDIVIDUALS IF WE DO NOT LEARN TO WORK TOGETHER IN COMMON PROJECTS BACK HOME IN NIGERIA HOW THE HECK CAN WE ACHIEVE SUCCESS GLOBALLY.

THE PROBLEM IS "NOT" SIASIA BUT THE LACK OF TRUE WORK RATE, LACK OF SELF ESTEEM, LACK OF INTEGRITY, LACK OF UNITY DISPLAYED FIRSTLY FROM THOSE THAT LEAD NIGERIA RIGHT DOWN TO THE MAN WHOS JOB IT IS TO SHINE SHOES.

READING PEOPLES RESPONSE SHOWS THE REASONS WHY WE ARE WERE WE ARE TODAY. BLAME, BLAME, BLAME WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE OBVIOUS.

ILL SAY THIS AGAIN - IF WE UNDER ACHIEVE ECONOMICALLY WITH THE SCANT ATTENTION OUR LEADERS AND GENERALLY PEOPLE PAY TO THE THE COUNTRY AT LARGE HOW WILL WE PROGRESS IN "football". NIGERIA IS CURSED BECAUSE OF WHAT WE HAVE DONE TO THAT COUNTRY AND THE SORE IS SO BLATANTLY VISIBLE ITS EMBARRASSING.

siasia is very good coach but he don't pick the best good legs for this world cup.i trust him to be a good and the best coach in nigeria right now but he don't give us what we all believe in him.this time he fails us all,i see nothing like nigeria way of play,,,no single team sprit. Again fellow nigerian fans another young and strong on both land and air is now talk of the town here in swiss liga, his 20yr old ideye Brown 10 goals in 11 matchs

my fellow good forumites don't and good wishers of fe and sia1,dont be angry with this illegal aliens blaming sia1 for the lost we had so far on the ungoing tourny, maybe amodu has bribed his country men to come here and post things that will make us or better still NFF,not to listen to voice of reasoning, and still continue with their purse enrichment instead of putting the nation first in evry thing they do,how can someone that has eyes keep blaming siasia for this two lost,or better still they did not watch the match but have recieved some mere tips to come here and post rubish,
GOD go punish all of una soonext.
watch and see what will happen in our football and nation very soon.
God that keepeth naija never sleep. u watch and see.

chijioke: 2009-09-30 10:46

I knew since that siasia is never a good coach but only uses over aged players to achieve his results, now that fifa is so much strict on age he cann't perform again pls nigeria look for a better coach.

sly1: 2009-09-30 13:54

A lot of people criticizing the coach now supported him before. So all it takes is a couple of losses to lose the respect that he took years to build. Sorry turn coats,SIASIA IS STILL A GOOD COACH. I support him and as soon as his players start shooting on target, thir fortunes will change. Losing to Spain by an offside goal and a controversial penalty is not something to be ashamed of. The guys lookedsharper and more purposeful against Spain than they did in their first outing. KEEP IMPROVING AND GO OUT THERE AND HUMILIATE TAHITI
