Bees threaten protest over stadium

Posted: 2009-09-26 09:58

Ranch Bees and Kaduna United Supporters’ Clubs have threatened to stage a peaceful demonstration if the decision taken by Kaduna State Government not to allow their clubs the usage of Kaduna Township Stadium during this year’s Premier League is not reverted.

Umar Ahmed and Alhaji Ya’u Mohammed Inuwa, chairmen of Ranch Bees and Kaduna United Supporters’ Club, said in Kaduna that the decision was taken because both clubs were unhappy that they could not use their home stadium while clubs in other hosting states were allowed use of their respective stadia.

An instruction from the Kaduna State government had directed the clubs to seek alternative venues as the Kaduna stadium was being prepared for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

As a consequence, Kaduna United FC will now play their home League matches in Gusau, Zamfara State, while Ranch Bees FC will play their home matches in Kano.

Incidentally, Bees will play at either the Sani Abacha Stadium, a venue for the World Cup or the Kano Pillars stadium, a designated training pitch for the tournament, same as the Kaduna Township Stadium.

Alhaji Inuwa Mohammed Aminu, Permanent Secretary of the Kaduna state Ministry of Youth and Sports, explained that the decision did not originate with the Ministry

“I want to tell you that if it were our contractors that are still handling ABS and training pitches we should be able to allow our clubs use the facilities but the management of these facilities has been taken over by FIFA,” he said.

This makes no sense. Did the state government say neither team could use Township or Ahmadu Bello Stadium because of the under-17 tournament, or are the stadiums just not in good shape? So thats five weeks away from home? What about stadiums in Zaria? Details please!!
