SuperSport beat a poor Cosmos

Morgan Gould scored a brace to lead SuperSport United to a 3-1 victory against Jomo Cosmos in a game that boasted lightning, thunder, four goals, six yellow cards and two red ones.

United showed class but missed several great scoring opportunities to hand Cosmos their first home defeat of the season at the Rand Stadium on a miserable Tuesday night in the South of Johannesburg.

Cosmos had Ousmane Berthe send off in the 55th minute and SuperSport had Glen Salmon sent off in the 60th minute.

The visitors certainly looked the more dangerous of the two sides in opening exchanges of the first half despite Cosmos having the lion’s share of possession.

It was only a matter of time before SuperSport would capitalise on one of their dangerous crosses and that is exactly what happened in the 22nd minute when Morgan Gould put United in front. It was a text book set piece as Langerman whipped an in-swinging free-kick from the left side of the field into a dangerous area inside the box; Gould simply obliged with a flick on header from a couple of yards out to score the game’s first goal, 1-0.

Soon after all the excitement started as lightning and thunder broke the crisp night silence in the South of Johannesburg. The wind picked up and the dug-out covering blew over as lighting continued to light up the night sky. It wasn’t long before referee Jerome Damon decided to call the players off the field.

After a period of about ten minutes, the players returned to the pitch and the game got under way once again. And SuperSport continued where they left off and should have doubled their lead in the 41st minute through Jabulani Maluleke.

However, the Cosmos goalkeeper had other ideas, producing the save of the season thus far with an instinctive dive to his right to block a powerful eight yard shot from Maluleke.

Referee Jerome Damon seemed to lose control of the game somewhat in the second 45 and it all started when he awarded a dubious penalty the way of SuperSport in the 53rd minute. Antony Laffor stepped up for United and after scoring from the spot-kick, he was order to retake it. On the second occasion Phali made a fine save to deny the striker the game’s second goal.

Two minutes later and Ousmane Berthe was shown a straight red card, a little harshly, for a high boot that accidently caught Salmon in the face. The referee did not even hesitate to dismiss the Cosmos player.

Then in the 59th minute the referee failed to award a clear free-kick the way of SuperSport when Emille Baron was obviously barged over by Sekou Camara when competing for a cross. The referee waved play on as Camara headed the ball home, 1-1.

Only a minute later and Salmon was also shown a red card for lashing out with a kick to the back of the heels of Elhadji Samb.

Back on level terms with ten men each, Cosmos certainly fancied their chances of getting something out of the game, but their hopes were snuffed out in the 74th minute when Gould grabbed his second of the match. The Bafana Bafana defender latched onto a corner-kick driving a powerful header past the Cosmos keeper, 2-1.

Substitute Thabo Mongalo confirmed the three points for SuperSport five minutes later when he scored his side’s third goal leaving the score at 3-1. That is how this fast paced, lightning filled, goal packed game finished. SuperSport certainly look to be finding the form that won them the league title last season.
