An 88th-minute goal from the in-form Franklin Cale ensured a 1-1 draw for Ajax Cape Town against Bidvest Wits at the Newlands Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
After an uneventful start to the game, Ajax created two great chances. On ten minutes Cale fired in a powerful shot at the near post, before on 12 minutes Thulani Serero had a header on target.
But on both occasions Wits keeper Darren Keet made excellent saves to keep the visitors in the game.
Clever Boys striker Calvin Kadi looked set to add to his four goals this season when he burst through on goal in the 22nd minute, but an excellent sliding challenge from Deniss Ivanovs prevented him.
Ajax continued to enjoy the superiority for the remainder of the first half, with the best chances falling to Dipsy Selolwane.
Wits started the second half with a better sense of urgency, and the deadlock was finally broken in the 64th minute when debutant Sibusiso Vilakazi threaded a lovely ball through for Kadi, who showed his sharpness and confidence in front of goal by easily slotting past Vonk.
Muhsin Ertugral’s side rallied hard for an equaliser, and could well have levelled matters in the 70th minute when Cale whipped in a great cross for Selolwane, but the former Botswana international sent his header just wide.
Soon after that Cale took matters into his own hands, and was unfortunate to see his 25-yard right-footed shot fizz inches wide.
For all their efforts, the Cape side struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and the Students seemed to be headed for the win.
But with two minutes to go, Mohammed Diallo burst into the box on the right hand side, doing well to pull the ball back to Cale, whose first time right-footed shot sent Keet the wrong way and settled in the back of the net for a late equaliser.
