South Africa’s national Under-20 team, Amajita, suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat at the hands of their German counterparts in Pirmasens over the weekend, raising concerns about their showing in the Fifa World Cup in Egypt later this month.
“We are working hard to deal with the deficiencies in the team. We were forced to change the squad and give other players an opportunity to prove their worth and this affected our results,” coach Serame Letsoaka is quoted in the media as saying after the game.
Letsoaka is set to cut down and name his Amajita squad for the Fifa Youth Championship later today.
Mandla Masango scored SA’s consolation goal.
“We need to work mostly on our weakness, which is defending. Defending set-pieces is still a problem and we also need to polish defending as individuals and defending as a team.
“Offensively we are good and have confident, powerful and skilful players. I am confident that we will give a good account of ourselves in Egypt,” Letsoaka added.
