The official opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) on Monday announced that it will be submitting questions in Parliament on the state power utility’s readiness for the 2010 World Cup.
DA MP Danie van Dyk said the recent spate of unannounced power outages, euphemistically referred to as “load shedding”, has brought Eskom’s ability to manage the security of electricity supply during the tournament into question.
He said given the current situation, there exists a real danger that South Africa will be left in the dark if proper precautions and back-up plans that make sufficient provision for all contingencies are not put in place.
“We simply cannot allow that such chaos over the management of electricity supply put the 2010 World Cup in jeopardy.”
