Twenty-five years after hosting its last major final, Orlando Stadium will relive the glory days when the second MTN8 Final will take place there on September 26.
Back then in March 1984, it was Kaizer Chiefs who hosted Durban City in the 2nd leg of the Champions of Champions final.
The 2009 MTN8 Final will see Ajax Cape Town and Golden Arrows battle it out for the R8 million Wafa Wafa Last Man Standing Prize.
The League’s Cup Committee confirmed the venue this morning after going through a lengthy process where a number of venues were considered.
“There’s no doubt that Orlando Stadium is a world class venue with world class facilities,” said PSL General Manager: Football, Ace Ncobo.
“As an iconic venue in our history, Orlando Stadium is worthy of a Cup Final.”
“It was also the wish of both clubs and the sponsors to take the Final to Orlando Stadium and after considering all our options we decided to go with this particular venue,” Ncobo added.
After undergoing a major revamp in 2006, Orlando Stadium re-opened its doors to top class football in November last year.
Used as a training venue for the recent 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, Orlando Stadium possesses probably the best pitch in South Africa at this stage. Evidence of this is the 11 goals scored in the last three matches played there.
Anthony Garstang, senior manager for sponsorship at MTN SA said: “We are happy about the decision to take the MTN8 Final to Orlando Stadium because this is an outstanding venue and most importantly, PSL considered our recommendations and those of our teams before reaching this resolution.
“We are also pleased that two of our football ambassadors are contesting the final because nobody understands the spirit of the MTN football brand better than these two teams. Both sides have exhibited the Last man standing approach very well in the manner they have approached their march to the final and the type of football they have played. It was Wafa Wafa indeed.”
Kickoff for the final is at 20:15. The match will be televised live on both SABC and SuperSport with SuperSport also showing the match in HD.
For the finals, MTN will be going all out and will be announcing of the Last Fan Standing winner and there will be live entertainment for young and old and for all tastes, refreshment stands, in-stadium competition with a cash prize and much more. It will be a festival of football and entertainment for everybody.
