Kaizer Chiefs got their first win of the PSL season by beating their hosts Amazulu 3-2 at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday.

Chiefs, who found themselves at the foot of the table going into this fixture, struck with two goals in the space of three minutes in the first half, from striker Nkosinathi Nhleko and midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala.

These were followed up with a decisive third from David Mathebula, 11 minutes after the interval.

In the 26th minute Nhleko was brought down in the Amazulu goal area by home side’s central defender, Pere Ariweryai, and Tshabalala sent Kalililo Kakonje the wrong way from the resulting spot kick. Three minutes later, Tshabalala’s defence splitting pass set up Nhleko for a one-on-one with Kalililo, and the striker finished with aplomb.

AmaZulu looked the livelier of the two teams in the first 25 minutes and kept the visitors pinned in their own half for long spells. The home side hit back in the 31st minute when Kampamba Chintu rose to head home Dlamini’s set piece.

A quickly-taken corner kick from Tshabalala in the 56th minute allowed Mathebula to restore Chiefs two-goal cushion with a stinging drive from a tight angle.

Shortly afterwards AmaZulu coach Neil Tovey rung the changes in an effort to give his team fresh impetus, bringing on two strikers in Ayanda Dlamini and Bradley Ritson, plus attack-minded midfielder, Litha Ngxabi.

And it was Ngxabi’s lay-off to Dlamini in the 71st minute that resulted in a second for AmaZulu, and set up an anxious closing quarter for the visitors. But Chiefs weathered the onslaught to land the maximum points.
