Chiefs pay the penalty

Posted: 26 August 2009 Time: 21:47

Siphiwe Tshabalala missed a penalty with the final kick of the game as Kaizer Chiefs crashed to a 1-0 defeat to Bidvest Wits at the Orlando Stadium.

It is another hammer blow to coach Vladislav Vermezovic, who has come under pressure following two defeats and a draw in his first three League matches in charge – and not a single goal scored.

Chiefs had made most of the early running, but the likes of Mandla Masango, Josta Dladla and Abia Nale failed to give goalie Darren Keet any serious problems.

And it was the Students who took the lead on 26 minutes through Mark Haskins, though there was a hint of offside to the goal.

Despite losing both Neil Winstanley and Justin Miller to injuries in the first half, Wits held onto their lead without too much stress, though Nale should have done better after Jose Torrealba’s close-range shot was parried.

Dladla then missed a sitter, while Nale had a goalbound effort blocked by Junaid Mashamaite with 20 minutes to go.

A minute later Chiefs were already celebrating, but referee Faiek Daniels ruled that Dladla’s header had not crossed the line.

And then, with the final kick of the game, Siphiwe Tshabalala, who had come on as a half-time substitute for Masango, got the chance to equalize from the spot after Knowledge Musona was fouled in the area, but Keet guessed the right way to further frustrate the AmaKhosi faithful.

"....though there was a hint of offside"....in your dreams, the player that was 'on an offside position' was not interferring with play. Surely maybe this team will gel with time but one thing is certain ; it lacks depth.Definately not champion material. It still remains to be seen for how long VV is going to sustain his 13 year-old record of not loosing 2 in a row).
