PTF plans N2.8bn Dinner for Eagles

PTF plans N2.8bn Dinner for Eagles

Posted: 2009-08-21 06:35

Nigeria's Presidential Task Force on World Cup qualifying is looking to raise a massive N2.8bn to prosecute the last three games of the Super Eagles campaign to reach South Africa 2010.

Task Force chairman and Rivers State governor Chibuike Amaechi said in Lagos on Thursday that the money is expected to be raised at a dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on August 27.

"The Federal Government has played its role within the limits of available resources in ensuring that our nation's flag is flown in South Africa during the 2010 World Cup.

"The Presidential Task Force wishes to seek the support of individual and corporate Nigerians to lend a helping hand to complement the funding of the Super Eagles campaign for qualification and participation at the World Cup proper," Amaechi stated.

"In this regard, a dinner has been planned to raise funds to augment what is available for the prosecution of the World Cup campaign."

Amaechi added that President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua "has graciously accepted to chair the occasion."

According to Amaechi, President Yar'Adua has already made a sizeable contribution to the cause, but the bulk of the money is expected to come from Nigerians and explained how the funds will be utilized.

"We will provide proper training kit and equipment for the team, give them adequate motivation, fly as many supporters as we can to Kenya for our last game and pay the increased bonuses to the players and coaches."

Medium term, the governor said part of the proceeds will be used to build and maintain a befitting gym facility for the players to train at the National Stadium.

If Mrs. Yar'adua could raise billions for a questionable cancer centre, why not for a noble cause like a national asset like the SE. But good ideas in Nigeria always have a way of going wrong. Where there is plenty of money and no ground rules about disbursement, there is bound to be painful stories to tell. PTF, please before you start, tell us how the money will be spent. I no go fit shout.

totally disgusting for private organisation not affiliated to football body to raise money for national team, this is the first time i heard this, anything happen now in nigeria.

val: 2009-08-21 11:50

a round of applause!!!!!
so after rasing this "massive fund" to prosecute the last three remaining matches "and qualify" would we also need to raise " a gigantic" fund to enable our SE feature in south africa 2010?
me think the confused presido task force should focus in helping the coaching crew get the SE legs to prosecute these games first, putting adequate protocol in place for timely visa procurements, reservations, etc, which has marred our last freindlies and qualifiers, because funds has never been the problem here.
a good idea though, to raise funds for our SE, but like we all know, someone is also out their plotting a way of grabbing, tucking and stealing the proceeds from the fund, just like the last we have heard of the stolen SE money right under the nose of the NFF.
Like Ameachi said in his last statements above, i think he is wrong about the what they plan to do with the money, he should come up with something better:
proper training kit and equipment? how?
adequate motivation? how?
fly as many supporters? how many more on how much?
increased bonus to players and coaches? how?
and when the money is exhausted what happens?
would we raise another during breakfast or lunch?
Conclusively, i think this fund raising dinner should be shoved aside for now, and can only be tangible when we qualify as a FUND RAISING DINNER FOR SUPER EAGLES SOUTH AFRICA 2010.

NFF SET TO ROCK GLOBAL FAMILY BOAT

It is becoming clearer by the day that Nigeria is being lined up to take the threats of the Golden Eaglets Coach John Obuh not to expect successful outing at the Under-17 World Cup Finals if the disqualification of his boys stays, seriously and to heart. This is evident in the new line of thinking of the Nigeria Football Federation weeks after the result of the MRI scan which showed 16 of the players were over-aged.
Now the federation is making out it doubts the authenticity of the results, and therefore the integrity of the doctors, the National Hospital in Abuja and that of the world football governing body, FIFA.
NFF is now trying to summon the parents of the players affected in order to make them testify against capability of science and technology and against everyone that would like to tow the line of the results that the doctors and FIFA had declared in relations to the alleged over-aged players.
Only this week Chairman of the Bauchi State Sub-seat for the tournament, Aminu Maigari had declared that with the abundance of talents that Nigeria has the benefit of, the decamping of 16 players of the team should not be a threat to the country.
Also, the NFF Deputy Secretary General (Technical), Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme had Wednesday called on Nigerians to see the early detection, which led to the decamping of 16 players as a blessing in disguise.
But while Nigerians are still wondering what measures are to be taken to rectify the situation, the NFF has started making out it does not believe in the MRI result; hence the summoning of the parents of the affected players.
The Chairman of the NFF Technical Committee, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi disclosed the shocking news to reporters that the parents are to confirm the real age of their wards.
Ogunjobi told shocked reporters that the NFF could not accept the result of the test blindly, stressing that there has been cases where the MRI test has been proved wrong in Europe. Because we are not the parents of these players, and having had cases where this test have given a wrong result in Europe, we believe it is the parents of these players that will help solve the issue.”
He however added a caveat that the parents will be made to sign a government paper if they maintain that the ages of their boys are different from what the MRI test stated.
Ogujobi further added that the result is not bothering the NFF but that the body would, all the same, take adequate measures to remedy the situation if it eventually becomes clear that everyone else except themselves are correct that the age of the boys are over the limit. The measures, he said, would be quick replacements in camp, of the affected players.
Meanwhile the team has been ordered back from Bauchi where they are camped. “We have decided to call the team back to Abuja from their camp in Bauchi, so that we can address the issue with them adequately. Also, the parents of the affected players will be summoned to give evidence on the ages of their children.”
Ogunjobi also noted that it was the NFF, in conjunction with FIFA, who initiated the test in the first place and that they did this to make sure that no over aged player will be allowed to make the team. He added that the result of the test would make Nigeria present a team that will be free from any age scandal.

Only in Nigeria do we hear of such things from the leaders! Can anyone tell me when England organized a fund-raising dinner for the National Team? Their coach has been busy working, playing friendly matches, trying out new players, looking for depth in the defence, midfield, attack and even the reserve bench, perfecting strategies and tactics. Our coach goes to England to watch the league matches live and have lunch with the players.

Good preparation and sound technical coaching crew, as well as good, dedicated ambitious players win matches, not fund-raising dinners. September 6, is only 2 weeks away. Is this the preparation for that crucial match?

I love Naija. One of our greatest ingenuities lies in CIRCUMVENTING the law. However, until we learn to circumvent the law of nature without adverse cosequencies we will continue to be losers. From raising of Billions of naira to MRI there's absolute no vote of confidence on NFF.

collins: 2009-08-21 16:59

@shijo,my question is the same as yours,it is only in our country that all things new happen in football.fifa place football affairs under federation our country placed it under task force.very ridiculous..
