Highlands Park coach Owen Da Gama has urged winger Mahlatse Makudubela to regain his confidence and make a return to the starting line-up.

The Lions of the North signed Makudubela as a free agent in November, after Chippa United let him go at the end of last season.

Makudubela was used just once at Chippa in 2017/18 and Da Gama feels his confidence was hit hard by the lack of game-time at the Chilli Boys.

Since joining Highlands, the former Orlando Pirates winger has featured just three times in the Absa Premiership and has been left out of the 18-man matchday squad.

“He only played one game for Chippa in the previous season. You even look at Enocent [Mkhabela]. Enocent spent a lot of time not playing at Chiefs and it takes its toll on a player, but we try and help them," Da Gama tells

"Even against Polokwane we tried to push Makudubela, but you can see that he can only do so much and then he falls down. Sometimes you don’t get it immediately right with a player, but we are hoping as time goes, he will eventually get to a level where he can now start performing because we know that he is a quality and intelligent player.

"It’s like an inferiority complex, you have not been playing so it’s been negative all around. So once they break out of that bubble, he and Mkhabela and whoever has not been playing will get their confidence. We are trying to get their confidence back.”
