Downs want to wrap things up sooner

Mamelodi Sundowns want to wrap things up sooner rather than later in the CAF Champions League and not go into their final group match needing to win at all costs, as was the case last season.

Sundowns, who are top of the table in Group A on six points, play their fourth group match against ASEC Mimosas in Abidjan tonight [18h00], knowing that a victory would move them to within one point of securing a place in the knockout stages, with two matches still to play.

Last season Sundowns went into their final group match against Horoya, on home soil, needing to win to progress, but they played to a goalless draw and finished third in the group, missing out on a place in the quarter-finals.

“Of course it’s a big game and we want to put ourselves in a good position. I think the guys have learnt from what happened last season in the Champions League. The most important thing is to work hard on the day and get those maximum points,” said Anele Ngcongca from Abidjan.

“Anyone can still qualify in the group. We are playing in their home ground, which gives them an advantage. They are not going to sit back, because they know if they lose this game their chances of going through are very slim.

“It’s going to be a very hard game. We know how they play and that’s a good advantage, because we just played against them now in Pretoria, so we know what kind of team we are facing.”
