Larsen gets debut win with Chippa

Posted: 19 January 2019 Time: 01:51 pm

Clinton Larsen got his Chippa United reign off to a flying start with a 2-0 victory over Maritzburg United in the Absa Premiership on Saturday afternoon.

Maritzburg made just two changes from their midweek loss to Mamelodi Sundowns, while Chippa handed a debut to Gladwin Shitolo as part of their five alterations.

The Team of Choice were on the back-foot after 11 minutes when Thabo Rakhale’s volley flashed wide of the upright after being set-up by Kurt Lentjies.

The visitors soon had their first chance after Justice Figareido made contact with Thabiso Kutumela to get a shot away, but the nimble-footed striker fluffed the delivery from six-yards on 23 minutes.

Towering defender Federic Nsabiyumva went close to putting Chippa in front from a corner, but the headed effort slightly missed the top of the net in the final quarter.

The Chilli Boys' attacking dominance continued in the second half and they received their reward with a sweetly-taken top corner finish from Tebogo Tlolane in the 53rd minute.

On 64 minutes, Chippa doubled their advantage thanks to Andile Mbenyane’s glancing header to pile more misery on the Team of Choice.

The bottom-placed side retrieved from their lumbering ways when Bandile Shandu picked out Kutumela on the edge of the box, but the striker's effort sailed over the top later on.

Clinton Larsen introduced his first change in the final ten minutes to the end, taking off Lentjies for Daine Klate while Rhulani Manzini made for Lerato Manzini later on. The latter didn’t beat around the bush coming on as he created space on the outside of the area to produce a finger-tip save from Ofori on 81 minutes.

In the end, Larsen's men were able to see out the remaining stages with ease to claim their third victory of the campaign.

Following their Nedbank Cup adventures, Chippa’s next assignment in the league will be the visit of Baroka FC on February 3rd while Maritzburg travel to leaders Bidvest Wits two days earlier.
