Iniesta on historic Modric Ballon d'Or title

With Luka Modric having dedicated his Ballon d'Or title to the technically gifted midfielder's in the past who were snubbed for the award, FC Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta has commented on his historic achievement.

Iniesta, 34, is widely regarded as one of the best playmakers of his generation after winning 30 major titles during a distinguished 16 years at the Camp Nou.

As well as his club exploits, the diminutive midfielder amassed 131 caps for the Spain national team and played an integral role in winning the European Championship twice and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

And many consider the Spaniard one of the greatest players to never win the most coveted individual honour in world football, as he finished as runner-up to Lionel Messi in 2010 and third place in 2012.

However, when 33-yeard-old Modric ended the decade hegemony of Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi last week, he paid special praise to the former LaLiga superstar, claiming his victory is 'for all the players who probably deserved to win it and didn't'.

Amidst the Croatian midfielder's triumph, there's been plenty debate over Ronaldo's second-place finish and Europen Golden Shoe winner, Messi, only finishing in fifth, but Iniesta feels the outcry is unwarranted.

"Fifth [in the Ballon d'Or voting] is not an insult [to Messi], but for me he is the best," Iniesta told reporters at a promotional event for Barcelona, as per AS.

"But it would be bad to say that it was unfair for [Luka] Modric to win, he had a great season."

Modric won the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League and lead his country to the final of the FIFA World Cup to become the first Croatian to win the title awarded by France Football.
