New Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp is aware that Amakhosi supporters will expect him to hit the ground running.
Having been at Chiefs in the past, Middendorp knows that there’s pressure from day one and three points will be expected when Amakhosi take on SuperSport United at Mbombela Stadium in the Absa Premiership this evening (19h30).
Middendorp has had little time with the squad before the game against Matsatsantsa, so he is unlikely to make too many changes at this stage.
“You should never underestimate teams like Baroka, Free State Stars. I think for me it’s a journey of 16 games until the end of the season. I won’t put it too much on one, two, three or five. Of course there is a very clear understanding, and I don’t think it has to be mentioned specifically, that points must come. There’s no doubt about it, I am aware about it,” Middendorp said earlier this week.
“Now in the moment I think the team has this feeling of pressure in the past weeks and not really being successful. I think it’s not a good piece of work and [I won’t] jump in and hammer them. I need to put two or three elements in, not too much or to overload them, and I hope we can transfer it into the game.”
It’s Amakhosi's final match of the year and they would love to end what has been a difficult 12 months, which have seen two coaches leaving the club, with a victory to build on at the start of 2019.
“We are focused, absolutely. We need to show our abilities and be together in a proper way. We need to respect a SuperSport team with good results and a good position in the moment. We have to perform on a very high level and be successful,” the former Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United coach said.
The Soweto giants are seventh on the table, a place below SuperSport, going into the clash tonight.
