Tau brace helps make history

Percy Tau was at the double for Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday evening, helping his club achieve a historical feat.

Making his 15th start for his Belgian club, Tau – who has been nominated as a candidate for the 2018 CAF Player of the Year award – took to the field in his side’s Last 16 tie against lower league outfit Knokke, with Union taking the lead as early as the 10th minute, only for their opponents to equalise just before half-time as the two teams headed into the break deadlocked at 1-1.

However, the hosts took the game by the scruff of the neck early in the second half thanks to Tau, who gave his side the lead in the 59th minute, before adding another 10 minutes later to give Union a comfortable two-goal cushion.

Yet a red card to teammate Marcel Mehlem, followed by Knokke’s second strike with seven minutes to go, set up a nervy end to the game, with the Union faithful overjoyed at the sound of the final whistle as their side secured a 3-2 victory.

In doing so, they qualified for the Belgian Cup quarter-finals for their first time in 50 years, and will now face heavyweights Racing Genk in the Last 8 on Tuesday, 18 December.

Elsewhere, Mihlali Mayambela made his ninth league start for Portuguese club Farense as they went down 1-0 to Benfica II in their league encounter which leaves them sixth on the log after 12 games, while in Bulgaria, May Mahlangu failed to make the match day squad for a second game in succession as Ludogorets drew 1-1 with CSKA Sofia, maintaining their six-point lead at the top of the standings after 18 matches.
