Players Abroad: Hat-trick for Veldwijk

Lars Veldwijk continued his rich vein of form in the Netherlands, netting a hat-trick to headline this week’s wrap of South Africans playing abroad.

KURT ABRAHAMS
Abrahams played the full 90 minutes in his 11th appearance for Westerlo, who suffered a second defeat in succession, going down 2-0 to Tubize to remain fourth on the table after 14 games.

THABO CELE
Cele played 75 minutes of his fifth start for Portuguese First Division club Cova de Piedade, who lost 2-1 to bottom-placed Porto II, leaving them 15th on the table with nine points after nine games.

SAMEEHG DOUTIE
Doutie played the entire match in his ninth appearance of the season as Swedish second-tier club Vernamo lost 1-0 to ninth-placed Frej in their last game of the season, as they ended the campaign in 13th place out of 16 teams on the log. This means Vernamo will have to contest the relegation play-offs against third-tier opposition Syrianska to ensure they are not demoted.

KEAGHAN JACOBS
Jacobs played the full 90 minutes in his 10th game of the season as Livingston held log leaders Celtic to a goalless draw, lifting them up one place to seventh in the Scottish top-flight standings after 12 games.

KYLE JACOBS
In his 13th game of the season, Jacobs played the full 90 minutes as Queen of the South drew 1-1 away at Ayr United, a result which leaves them sixth on the table after 13 games.

LIAM JORDAN
Jordan made his 16th league appearance for Danish club Koge, who are now nine games without a win as they lost 4-1 to Roskilde, leaving them sixth on the log after 17 matches.

MAY MAHLANGU
Mahlangu was an unused substitute as Bulgarian club Ludogorets beat Beroe 1-0 to maintain their three-point lead at the top of the league standings after 15 games.

SERGIO MARAKIS
Marakis played the full 90 minutes as Nacional snapped a nine-game winless streak with a 1-0 win over the South African’s former club Maritimo; yet remain in the relegation zone in 17th place with just nine points from their 10 games played.

LEBO MOTHIBA
Strasbourg stretched their unbeaten run to seven games following a 0-0 draw with Mothiba’s former club Lille, as the South African lasted 86 minutes in his 10th game of the season. His club now sit eight on the log after 13 games.

THIBANG PHETE/ MIHLALI MAYAMBELA
Phete got his ninth start for Portuguese First Division club Vitoria Guimaraes II as they drew 2-2 with Farense, with South Africa’s Mihlali Mayambela absent from the match day squad. The result leaves Guimaraes in 13th, and Farense in eighth.

LEBOGANG PHIRI
Phiri was an unused substitute as Guingamp conceded a ninth goal in the space of two games, going down 4-2 at home to Olympique Lyon as they remain rooted to the bottom of the Ligue 1 standings.

THULANI SERERO
Serero was missing from Vitesse’s match day squad over the weekend, reportedly due to injury, as they beat Utrecht 2-1, leaving them seventh in the Eredivisie after 12 games, with the player’s availability for Bafana Bafana’s AFCON qualifier against Nigeria now in doubt.

PERCY TAU
Tau played the full 90 minutes as Union Saint Gilloise lost for the first time in 11 games, going down 2-1 to log leaders Mechelen, who increased the gap at the top of the Belgian First Division to six points over Tau’s side.

SIPHIWE TSHABALALA
‘Shabba’ was introduced in the 89th minute as Erzurumspor won for the first time in five games, earning a vital three points in a 2-1 win over eight-placed Goztepe, lifting them off the bottom of the log and into 17th place after 12 games.

LARS VELDWIJK
Veldwijk continued his incredible run, netting a hat-trick in Sparta Rotterdam’s 4-2 victory over Utrecht II – his 13th goal in 13 games – as his side maintained top spot in the Dutch First Division with 30 points after 13 games.
