Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune has spoken out about his weight struggles, and has vowed to continue on his journey to shed more kilograms.

Khune’s physical shape became a major point of discussion over the past two seasons, and often faced backlash about his performances for club and country.

Memes started circulating on social media as his performances also begun to dip somewhat, but still managed 16 clean sheets in 27 matches for Amakhosi last season and picked up the Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season award.

However, the criticism did strike ‘Itu’ at some point and forced him to turn his lifestyle around, which has since helped him lose eight kilograms thus far, but he assures he is far from done with the trimming down.

“I have been working very hard because last season I was criticised about my weight, after the match that we lost against Golden Arrows,” said Khune.

“I always thought that it [weight] comes with age as you grow older, so I realised I was even suffering from a lot of injuries because I was overweight, which I needed to do something about.

“So, I consulted and got advice. I started eating well, started drinking more fluids and started putting in extra work, and I came back stronger. Now I’m not suffering from any minor or major injuries because of the weight loss.

“My perfect weight was 84 kilograms but I was once on 92 and now my target is 78. I know that once I get to 78, people will start saying, ‘Go and test.’ I will go and do it in public.”
