Solinas: Best Chiefs still to come

Coach Giovanni Solinas insists the best Kaizer Chiefs is yet to come following his side’s 4-1 thumping of Cape Town City.

Chiefs earned their first three points of the season in style on Saturday, putting four past the 10-man hosts, with a Khama Billiat brace, as well as goals from Siyabonga Ngezana and Philani Zulu, ensuring Amakhosi left the Mother City with a full quota of points.

“I want to thank my boys today because they played very well. A great performance, everybody put in the effort, everybody played well,” Solinas said after the match.

“On the bench, I saw the solidarity, the spirit [of] the team. So I am very happy because our fans deserve this victory and it is for our fans because today our fans make the difference. They support us, they support the boys. The boys played very well because they feel they won [over] the supporters, so me I want to thank the supporters – this victory is for us. I want to thank my players for the great performance and the good result of the game today.”

The Italian, who had previously insisted that he needed time following a poor string of results, says the FIFA international break was just what Chiefs needed.

“The best Kaizer Chiefs is still to come,” he said. “We needed that time – we had two weeks at our disposal, and used last week to improve and fix our mistakes. The boys trained very well and I was happy as all the guys worked hard. So many good players like Lebo Manyama, 'Dax', George Maluleka and Mario Booysen are now available, so the real Kaizer Chiefs is coming.”

Solinas then shared his thoughts on the Citizens and opposition coach Benni McCarthy, before wishing his rivals well ahead of their upcoming MTN8 final against SuperSport United.

“Cape Town City for me is a very good team, with good players,” he said. “Benni is a good, young coach with good coaching ideas, and in the future I think he will be a very, very good coach. It was tough against them, but I’m happy for them reaching the cup final, and I wish them all the best for that game.”

Chiefs are next in action on Tuesday evening away at Free State Stars.
