Watford's winning start to the Premier League season came to an end after going down 2-1 to Manchester United on Saturday evening.

Paul Pogba almost opened the scoring for United in the 12th minute with a left-footed strike from just outside the box but Hornets goalkeeper Ben Foster pulled off the save

Troy Deeney was unlucky not to have grabbed the lead for Javi Gracia’s charges three minutes later with a superb side-footed shot that was kept out by the Red Devils shot-stopper David de Gea.

Romelu Lukaku finally broke the deadlock for United ten minutes before halftime, guiding home a teasing cross from Ashley Young

Chris Smalling quickly doubled the lead for the visitors seven minutes before the break with a smashing half-volley inside the six-yard box after taking Marouane Fellaini’s header onto his chest, 0-2.

Pogba almost got the third goal for Mourinho’s men in first half stoppage ime with a chance at the back post but Foster kept the scoreline respectable with a brilliant save.

United were in the ascendency ten minutes into the second stanza but they were yet to create clear chances in that period.

Andre Gray got a goal back for the hosts in the 65th minute with a low finish from close range that left De Gea with no chance..

The Red Devils were absorbing the pressure in the last quarter of an hour while the Hornets were going all out for the equaliser.

United were dangerous on counter-attacks though as Gracia’s men left themselves exposed at the back while in an all out attack.

The hosts certainly had the momentum in the last five minutes, camping inside the Red Devils’ half but Mourinho’s charges were spirited in defence.

Nemanja Matic was sent off for United in the closing stages but the visitors hung on to claim three points.
