Horoya ends Downs' CCL journey

Posted: 28 August 2018 Time: 04:56 pm

Mamelodi Sundowns' CAF Champions League campaign came to an end after they could only manage a 0-0 draw with Horoya in their final Group C clash.

Sundowns struggled to penetrate the visitors early on, who looked more comfortable on the ball and its way around the offensive third.

The Brazilians came close to unlocking the defence after combination of passes by Themba Zwane and Gaston Sirino found Jeremy Brockie who shot tamely at Khalidou Ndiaye on 18 minutes.

Horoya asked questions of their own, with Denis Onyango called to pick out a goal-ridden 40-yard shot on 23 minutes by Aboubacar Camara.

With little openings, the game failed to ignite on all fronts with no team showing any ability whatsoever to break through the offensive third towards the half and hour mark.

That said, Horoya looked more menacing whenever the opportunity presented itself to go on the attack towards the halftime period.

The offensive trio of Sirino, Zwane and Sibusiso Vilakazi were non-existent for the home side, who continued battling away.

The small crowd for a second got on the back of Brockie after failing to take aim at Ndiaye after being sent through one-on-one by Hlompho Kekana on 38 minutes.

On the stroke of halftime, a square pass by Tebogo Langerman from the left found Sirino at the far post but the Uruguayan ballooned the chance.

The second half brought the same resilience from Horoya who continued attacking with pace down the flanks and through the middle of the park.

A free-kick on 56 minutes from Brefo Mensah a just outside the box, forced Onyango to get down and forced the save.

The Brazilians best chance to go ahead found Langerman’s left-footed strike from a shot-corner deflecting off the head of an opposing defender and onto the top of the post on 62 minutes.

As time raced on, Sirino found himself at the centre of another opportunity after a pass from Vilakazi but shot straight at Ndiaye from a central position inside the box 15 minutes from time.

Having brought on Anthony Laffor earlier for Jeremy Brockie, Pitso Mosimane decided to add another attacking body in search to break the all elusive duck with Lebohang Maboe replacing Tiyani Mabunda.

Sundowns pushed hard for the winner, but despite the good touches on the ball in their forward movements, found it tough to penetrate the opponents rear-guard who advance to the last eight.

Teams:

Sundowns: Onyango, Ngcongca, Arendse, Nascimento, Langerman, Kekana, Mabunda (78 Maboe'), Zwane, Sirino, Vilakazi, Brockie (Laffor 56')

Subs: Mweene, Maboe, Manyisa, Meza, Madisha, Ngoma, Laffor.
