Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lebohang Maboe wants to follow in the footsteps of Bongani Zungu, Keagan Dolly and Percy Tau, who have all gone overseas in the past few years.
Zungu was first to leave in 2016 after some impressive performances both locally and on the continent for Sundowns, while Dolly and more recently Tau followed suit.
Maboe made his CAF Champions League debut when he came on as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat to defending champions Wydad Casablanca last Friday and is hoping that it’s the beginning of good things to come in his career.
“Sundowns is a big team, not just in South Africa, but in Africa as well. You also know that they send players overseas,” the former Maritzburg United midfielder said.
“I feel like every overseas team that comes and checks [for players], they look at CAF, so that actually inspired me [to join Sundowns]. Plus there’s the fact that they play in CAF. So I always need to keep on working hard and that’s what’s going to help me. I need to believe in my abilities.”
Maboe did not get a run against Highlands Park last night at Loftus Stadium, but is likely to return when Sundowns take on Cape Town City in the MTN8 first leg semi-finals in the Mother City on Saturday (15h00).
