Golden Arrows coach Clinton Larsen has rued the departure of a former Bidvest Wits striker, who he feels was on course to be “the signing of the season”.

Larsen was on hand to collect the Absa Premiership Coach of the Month award for May, prior to the announcement of the PSL Award nominees at the league’s headquarters on Monday.

The Durban-based tactician, who shared his analysis on a number of the nominees, reserved special praise for departed Wits forward Amr Gamal, who was nominated for the Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament award.

Larsen felt the Egyptian front-man, who netted three goals in the four-game tournament, was a marvel to watch prior to falling out of favour at the Milpark-based outfit, which went on to be crowned champions of the league cup.

“For me, while Gamal was still playing in the country I thought he was one of the best strikers in the league,” admitted Larsen.

“He’s a really, really highly-rated player, and I’m not too sure what happened but in the matches I saw him play he was really top-class.

“I felt that he could have been the signing of the season had he stayed the full course of the season.”

Gamal, who was loaned out to Wits from Al Ahly, has since joined Finnish side Helsinki until the end of July.

The 26-year-old was left out of The Pharaohs' World Cup squad due to his lack of game-time during the latter stage of his stay with the Clever Boys.
