Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Wiseman Meyiwa is happy with his progress in his debut professional season, but admits he will have to improve next term.
Meyiwa was promoted from Chiefs’ youth ranks to the first team at the start of the season by departed coach Steve Komphela, and managed to show some promise in central midfield, alongside the likes of Willard Katsande and George Maluleka.
The Pietermaritzburg-born youngster, however, is no stranger to the big stage having featured for the national Under-20 side at the 2017 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as well as at the FIFA U-20 World Cup last year.
With 19 appearances in all competitions for his club, the 17-year-old, who is currently back in camp with Amajita ahead of their 2019 U-20 AFCON qualifier against Mozambique, seems to be content with his contribution in his maiden PSL campaign.
“My first season wasn’t easy hey, but my teammates made me look good and helped me with a lot of stuff,” Meyiwa tells KickOff.com.
“Experienced players like ‘Shabba’ [Siphiwe Tshabalala], Katsande, Maluleka, ‘Rama’ [Ramahlwe Mphahlele] … In fact, the whole team helped me.
“But I can say I’m happy because it was my first season, and I’m looking forward to the next season. I want to play all the games.”
Since marking his arrival in topflight football with a goal on debut against Cape Town City in September last year, Meyiwa is disappointed that the goals dried up and feels he needs to improve in that aspect of his game next season.
“Yeah, obviously, somewhere, somehow I need to improve. My strength is obviously my stamina, and next season I’d like to score long-range [goals],” he adds.
“I’m disappointed that I didn’t score more after my first goal against Cape Town City, but I think next season I will do better.
“The pressure from the team wanting to win something might have played a part, but we tried our best and luck just wasn’t on our side.”
Meyiwa will miss his side's final clash of the season when they visit Ajax Cape Town on Saturday afternoon (15h00), but will be involved in international action when Amajita take on the young Mambas in Beira at the same time.
