Neymar: How Messi made me thrive

Brazil superstar Neymar may have left FC Barcelona in the summer for Paris Saint-Germain in a world record deal but now he's revealed how Lionel Messi helped him thrive during his stint at the Camp Nou.

Neymar, 26, left the Barca in August last year in a record £200m (R3.5b) deal after scoring 105 goals in 186 games and winning eight major titles over the course of four seasons in Spain.

However, the Brazil international admitted he initially doubted his ability at the Blaugrana but the five-time Ballon d'Or winner helped him overcome his fears, before thriving in one of football's most clinical strike forces alongside Luis Suarez and Messi.

"He saw that I was close to tears because I hadn't had a good first half," he told Altas Horas, as quoted by AS. "Messi saw that I was upset and he started to talk to me: 'you have to be yourself, play your football, and don't let yourself get intimidated.'"

"After talking to him I started to get going, to show my football and gain confidence," he added. "It was when I relaxed and became happy, and began a strong friendship."
