Zidane on four-goal Ronaldo

Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to keep improving for the remainder of the season as he now trails Lionel Messi by only three goals for the LaLiga top goalscorer prize.

After registering just a single league goal by mid-November, Ronaldo's recent goalscoring form to move onto 22 goals in 23 games has been nothing short of remarkable, even by the extreme standards of the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

His four-goal haul in the 6-3 victory over Girona on Saturday has put the Los Blancos club-record scorer in second-place for the Pichichi and Zidane feels his new found form has dramatically lifted the spirits of his side.

"[Ronaldo] is very important for us," Zidane said, as quoted by ESPN. "He transmits a very important, very positive energy for the rest of the group.

"On a personal level he has 22 goals, three behind Messi, so I hope [that goes well] for him, as when he is good, the team is good.

"He knows himself very well, knows when he must rest a bit, and when the end of the season arrives he is always very good. He scores goals, and always will.

"His ambition is tremendous, in every training game, every play, which makes him different from everyone else."
