Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey were on target as Arsenal recorded a 2-0 win over AC Milan in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League last 16 clash.

Milan were considered the favourites heading into the encounter after going unbeaten in their last 13 matches across all competitions.

However, it was the Gunners went close to opening the scoring after eight minutes when Jack Wilshere teed up Mkhitaryan, who fired into the side-netting.

The deadlock was eventually broken on 15 minutes when an unmarked Mkhitaryan collected a pass from Mesut Ozil before firing a deflected effort past Milan shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Despite going a goal behind, Milan continued to see more of the ball, although they struggled in the final third and failed to trouble David Ospina.

Donnarumma came to Milan's rescue in the closing stages of the first half as the Italian pulled off two fine saves to deny Callum Chambers and Danny Welbeck.

The Gunners did double their lead on the stroke of half-time, though, as Ramsey rounded Donnarumma and slotted into an empty net after being picked out by Ozil.

There was a good tempo to the start of the second half as both sides showed real attacking intent.

Nikola Kalinic had a chance to pull a goal back for Milan with 10 minutes remaining but Ospina raced off his line to thwart the Croatian.

The Gunners managed to see out the closing stages of the second stanza and will now head into the second leg with two away goals.
