Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Tiyani Mabunda has reflected on his difficult journey to stardom, and relishes the success he is currently experiencing.
Mabunda had a hapless start to life at Chloorkop after arriving from Black Leopards in July 2013, making just three substitute appearances in the 2013/14 campaign before being loaned out the following season.
However, the 29-year-old has since become one of the cornerstones of the Brazilians’ success since his return from a loan spell with Free State Stars in the 2014/15 season.
His partnership with Sundowns skipper Hlompho Kekana has earned rave reviews, with the centre-midfield pairing also establishing themselves in the Bafana Bafana set-up.
“Many people know the journey I’ve been through. It was never easy but I believe that it needs a person to be focused on what you believe in,” ‘Sugar’ explained, after receiving the Absa Premiership Goal of the Month accolade for his rocket-strike against Bloemfontein Celtic in December last year.
“If God has given you a task, one thing you should know is that it will not be easy, and many people give up along the way and yet want God to reveal himself unto them.
“In most cases, people who give up are never remembered, and it is through grace that I’m able to be one of the people remembered today, because of the journey I’ve been through.”
Mabunda also believes his struggles are what will shape him and get him further ahead in his career and life, and says he is proud to be an influential figure at Sundowns now.
“We have to face challenges as human beings because the bible says no weapon formed against us shall prosper; the bible doesn’t say the weapons won’t be formed,” he added.
“That is why I have so much faith in God, and I believe that every encounter or challenge that I face, it is just a way of me moving to another level.
“Today, I’m very proud to be one of the important players in the team, even though people may have discounted my value in the beginning. But, you know when God says yes, nobody can say no.”
