Argentina ask Messi to play less

Argentina football federation president Claudio Tapia admits he's asked Lionel Messi to manage his game time appropriately with Barcelona in hindsight of the 2018 World Cup.

With four months left before the global showpiece takes place in Russia, Tapia has urged La Albiceleste captain not to overexert himself over the final stretch of the European season in a bid to avoid major fatigue.

Messi has been in scintillating form for the Blaugrana this season, scoring 27 goals and registering 14 assists in 36 games, as Barca lead the LaLiga standings while remaining in contention for the UEFA Champions League and Copa Del Rey titles respectively.

"I hope that all the players will have the same form that they are in at the moment," Tapia told TYC Sports.

"This is important for the coaches and directors, we spoke with Messi for him to look after himself and play less at Barcelona."

Argentina kickoff their World Cup campaign against European minnows Iceland on the 16 of June this year.
