Mourinho in favour of Premier League VAR

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is in favour of the introduction of video assistant refereeing into the Premier League after mixed reactions within English media.

VAR has been shrouded by controversy within the FA Cup and EFL Cup this season where it's been introduced and while Mourinho is open to the idea, he remains wary of the ramifications it may bring into the emotional dynamics and spontaneity of the game.

However, the former Chelsea head coach believes the final decision needs to be made by referees, on whether they feel it improves their quality of officiating.

"When people ask us if we like it, if we don't like it, if we agree with it or don't agree with it, I think honestly it's a question for the referees," he told Manchester Evening News. "They want to perform the best they can, they don't like to make mistakes.

"So if the referees are happy with that technological support, then yes, let's go for the VAR. I think, from my perspective, I like the feeling.

"They need to make sure that they don't change the dynamic of the game too much, the emotion of the game too much – people waiting a couple of minutes to know if they can jump [and celebrate] because it was a goal."
