Zwane: I will fight for my position

Competition for places in attack is now even tougher at Mamelodi Sundowns, which is why Themba Zwane has stressed the importance of scoring and assisting more to keep his place in the team.

Zwane has been one of Sundowns’ star performers this season, with four goals and three assists. But with the likes of Gaston Sirino, Khama Billiat, Percy Tau, Aubrey Ngoma and Sibusiso Vilakazi fighting for positions in the starting line-up, the second half of the season has seen him featuring a bit less than what we are used to.

It came as a surprise when he did not play at all in the goalless draw with Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium late last month. He came on as a second half substitute in the following game against Cape Town City.

“The competition in the team is there. They have brought in new players and it’s healthy for me personally because there is no time to relax. I need to score and create more, so that they can keep on playing me. It’s all about being consistent if you want to play regularly,” he tells

Zwane says he is used to tough competition, having previously fought for a place in the team against men such as Lebohang Mokoena and Elias Pelembe.

“Sirino is a good player and he is more like 'Vila' [Vilakazi]. To be honest I am not worried about other players, I am worried about myself. I have previously competed with guys like 'Cheeseboy' [Mokoena] and Pelembe for a place in the team, so I am used to competing with quality players. I will fight for my position.”

The Bafana Bafana midfielder believes there’s still time for him to get recognised with a nomination for one of the big PSL awards at the end of the campaign.

“To be honest I have been doing well, but I did not play in games like the one against Kaizer Chiefs. That took my performance down, but there’s no time to look down. I need to put myself in a good position to be in one of the top awards. Hopefully I will be among nominees at the end of the season.”
